Copper coil

Please tell me about your copper coil? I've tried everything else contraception wise and it either makes me bleed really heavily, or gives me migraines. Did the copper coil help your heavy bleeding? I've had the implant in for 14 months now and only had 2 days bleeding free in that whole time so having it removed :(

Thanks

I’ve had one for 10 years now (waiting for it to be replaced but Covid isn’t making that possible!) Ive always had heavy periods and that hasn’t changed with the coil although for the first short while they were slightly heavier.

Copper coil normally makes bleeding heavier. When I first has mine I bled pretty solidly for the first 3 months.

It's settled now, but my period is still probably 3x heavier than it was before. Manageable for me because it used to be super light, but I wouldn't get it if you've got a history of heavy periods.

Not what you have asked but...

I have a mirena coil.
I've just had my first period since it was replaced in June 2019.

I have had a copper coil for 5 years.
I previously had the Mirena coil which was recommended over the copper coil due to heavy/painful periods. When I had the Mirena I bled constantly every day for over 6 months until I had it removed. The same thing happened with the progestogen only pill so I decided that the copper coil was the only option for long term reliable contraception.
It has been fine, my periods have not been noticeably heavier or more painful. Although I do find that the period pains now start earlier - usually start a couple of days before my period does but this could be done to age, I remember my mum was like this (always used to say that the pains were worse before her period and went away when her period started - she did not have a coil).
If you have tried other options and they are not suitable then I would try the copper coil. I was worried about it due to hearing that it can cause heavier more painful periods but that has not been my experience but I did have heavy painful periods anyway, perhaps it has more of an impact on people who previously had light periods.

I've had a copper coil in place for the past 5-6 years. It's brilliant. No discernible difference with periods/pain/mood anything. In fact I'd say my periods are more regular and manageable. I realise this is possibly quite unusual, and I'm very lucky in that respect.

Thanks everyone, I may as well try it and hope for the best. Good to see some people have had a good experience with it

I've had one for 3 years now. I was bleeding twice a month on the pill and the coil helped regulate it back to once a month. It is a bit lighter too. I'm very happy with it. Unfortunately the only way to see how it works for you is to try it out. Hope it works out well for you.

Interestingly enough I recently had a smear, and I’m convinced the nurse knocked it, because I had some weird mid cycle bleeding after that for several weeks. Might of course be because I’m hurtling towards menopause, but I’m in denial about ageing so I’m blaming the smear!
