Endometriosis extreme ovulation pain?

Lovemusic33 · 17/02/2021 07:11

Im awaiting a gynaecology appointment for possible endometriosis, this has been ongoing for years being fobbed of by gp's etc, heavy bleeding and a lot of pain. I came off tue pill as that was making bleeding worse, past 2 months I have had the worst ovulation pain, its up there with labour pains and appendicitis. I have now been in excruciating pain for over 48 hours, not slept, struggling to open bowels as in so much pain, pain is mainly on left side and back but does creep across my abdomen, I feel sick and poorly and have been struggling to look after dd's. Last time I went to go and he ruled out a kidney infection and just sent me away, I know if I go back I will be sent to a&e bit I don't want to spend half the day sat in a hard chair waiting to be seen when I'm struggling to stay upright, plus I have 2 dc's at home with ASD and no one to look after them. Im taking paracetamol and ibroprofen but its not really making much difference.

Has anyone else experienced this amount of pain when ovulating and with endometriosis? Is there anything else I can do to ease the pain?

hmmm, I'm wondering if I have endo. I had fibroids treated about a year ago to supposedly resolve very heavy bleeding and whilst it has reduced the bleeding it hasn't really had the effect either myself or my consultant were hoping for. I've also been getting a lot of lower abdominal pain, not as bad as you describe but enough to make me wince sometimes, particularly when running or walking. I don't think it's a muscular pain as it feels different and very much like that dull ache you get from period cramps. It seems to be worse the week after my period and I also get occasional sharp stabbing pains on one side down, to the inside of my pelvis.
I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you, the only person i know with bad endo takes the pill continuously to relieve their symptoms. I suspect their might suggest you try a mirena coil but my experience of that was that it made me bleed heavier and for longer, not less! I would push your GP for some decent painkillers but be aware than some of them (codeine i think it is) can make you constipated which probably won't help :(

I had a scan which showed one small fibroid but was told it wasn’t big enough to be causing the issues I’ve been having, scan showed no endo but I know scans don’t always show endo so I’m hoping with further investigation it will be found....or something will be found so I know what I’m dealing with.
I have just spoken to my GP and he’s prescribed me diclofenac for a few days to help with the pain.

This is going to be the most tmi thing but I get very bad ovulation pains too and they are made worse if I don't go to the loo. You mentioned being in pain to open your bowels but this could be making the pain worse. Sorry you feel so bad, mine normally only last a few hours but they're really incapacitating

Yes, I was in agony when I ovulated. I had a 7cm endometrioma on one of my ovaries. I was doubled over in pain with it - I remember lying on the bed and asking my husband to take off all my clothes below my waist because the slightest pressure, even underwear, was agonising. The only thing that cured it was having my ovaries removed (alongside a hysterectomy) but it had been escalating for about 20 years - possibly if I had been diagnosed sooner the drastic solution might have been avoided.

What sort of scan did you have? My ovarian endometrioma was picked up on a trans-vaginal ultrasound.

Even if it's not endo, clearly something is wrong for you to be in this much pain. I'm afraid you have to be very persistent to get a diagnosis - as I say, it took me 20 years.

This site managed by endometriosis UK is a very useful resource on diagnostic and treatment pathways, and general pain management:

I had awful ovarian pains on my left side and after much investigation, including blood tests and transvaginal scans I discovered I had an endometriosis cyst on my left ovary. It started off being 1cm and by the time it was removed it was almost 8cm. After I had my surgery I was told the whole cyst was endometriosis and they'd also discovered some pockets of endometriosis at the back of my womb.
We'd been ttc baby #2 and I fell pregnant on my 3rd cycle after surgery and I'm 12 weeks pregnant with twins!
If you're in that much pain (which I was so I can totally relate) don't be fobbed off and push for further investigations. The only way to fully ascertain endometriosis is to have a laparoscopy which is what I had and they removed all the endometriosis and cyst at the same time.

I had an internal ultrasound and at the time my ovaries looked fine (wasn't when I was having the pain). Im having a hysteroscopy (camera and possible biopsy) in 2 weeks time to get a closer look.

Fingers crossed that will identify something. Endometriomas can change in size throughout your cycle so if you weren't in pain at the time it might mean they were dormant at that particular moment.

I have endometriosis and get bad ovulation pain every other month. The other month (and other side!) It doesn't hurt nearly as much. I am prescribed Mefanimic acid now for ovulation and period, sometimes I take codeine with it too but not actually sure it helps (it's the only thing my GP have to offer, apparently)

So sorry to hear this - I have severe stage 4 endo, Adenomyosis and pcos (plus other things). Endo can definitely cause hideous ovulation pain, I used to get very flu symptoms too, chilled to the bone and exhausted. I would ask GP for naproxen or mefanemic acid to help with the pain (make sure you eat to protect stomach). Also cocodamol too maybe, think you can get over counter.

Hot water bottles. Tens machines good too.

I ended up having two surgeries for my endo which had substantially improved matters and also on the POP to prevent cycle which stops a lot of the pain.

Feel free to DM me xx hope you feel better soon

Also just to flag that endometriosis probably won’t show on a scan, it may show on MRI if it is very severe. I don’t think it would be apparent with a hysteroscopy as endometriosis is outside the uterus. Adenomyosis may be able to be seen though.
Do you have any bowel or bladder symptoms/pain? Take a look on the endometriosis Uk website for symptoms. If you do suspect bowel or bladder symptoms you can ask GP for referral to a BSGE specialist endometriosis centre (this is NICE guidelines).
Finally my eldest is probably ASD (range of learning difficulties too). I really sympathise it is incredibly difficult to look after a high needs child/children when so unwell.
Good luck
