Lynch Syndrome Early Hysterectomy

Ghostlyfeet · 03/02/2021 18:54

I have lynch syndrome which basically means I'm genetically predisposed to get several different cancers in the future. It's been suggested that I get a hysterectomy as a preventative measure.
I'm 39.
Has anyone had an early hysterectomy? I'm worried about early menopause, having to take
HRT etc. As well as not feeling sexy and any effect on my sex life.
I am done having children and it makes sense to have the op, I'm just nervous about the practicalities.

I'm 30 and have been offered a hysterectomy so watching this thread with interest.

It looks like it's just us Neversleepingever !

I probably should have just put early hysterectomy and not confused it with the lynch syndrome stuff.

Are you worried about the same things as me?

I’m having one, plus oorphrectomy later on this year due to a genetic predisposition towards cancer also. I’ll be having HRT too and I am not looking forward to instant menopause in the slightest.

Ghostlyfeet · 10/02/2021 21:30

That's the situation for me too. How old are you @Percivalthebabyspider ?

I had a hysterectomy when I was 30, I only had one ovary removed so I didn't need hrt at the time. I was warned that I could go through menopause early.
I actually started going through it at 40 and I'm currently on hrt.
I didn't have mine for the same reason as you OP but my hysterectomy was the best thing that happened to me. I felt like a new woman. I've never regretted it. I'm 50 now.

I had a hysterectomy coming up to 3 weeks ago at 39, ovaries, tubes and cervix out also. Have to say I completely dreaded it, it was necessary for severe endometriosis but I was very scared nonetheless, but for me it has not been as bad as I thought and HRT seems pretty great so far. I just had a few (admittedly bad) hot flashes in the week after the operation and before the HRT was obtained. Recommend getting it prescribed asap to prevent that and alleviate any concerns. Surgical menopause was no where near as bad as I thought. Possibly as I believe I was peri menopausal so actually think I feel better now on HRT. Oestrogen gel 4 pumps daily. Only a few weeks out so no sex yet but i am hoping that will be better than before as pain and bleeding was badly affecting that. Mentally am doing well so far and physically am definitely getting there, I would compare it to a c section you just need to take it easy for a few weeks. Recommend you take all the prescribed painkillers to keep on top of it, for at least 2 weeks anyway. I don’t need any now. I am tired but would be after any surgery and had an infection which was just bad luck. But so far I have no regrets at all! I didn’t have your particular issues but do consider it a bonus that I don’t have to worry about several certain cancers also now.. Best of luck!

I have just looked up hysterectomy rather than start a new thread and interesting to find this one as I am in the exact same situation having been diagnosed with Lynch syndrome in January. I have to have womb, ovaries and cervix removed and am worried about menopause, pain and reduced libido.

mackerelontoast · 07/03/2021 09:08

@Annab1983 if you work, how long did you book off? Physically what are you able to do?
I should have said I am 46 and kids are primary and secondary so no actual running around after little ones but thinking of other stuff like walk to school and stuff in the house.

Hi so I am about 6 weeks post op now and if I hadn’t had some complications I think I would probably have been ok to go back to work this week.. it’s hard to say though as ended up I had two post op infections and a bladder perforation.. I think had that all not happened (all bad luck really so not to say would happen to anyone else btw!) I would have been almost back to 100% by now.. i have a toddler so can’t really lift them still and when I push a trolley or anything I do get pain which tells me when I’ve overdone it.. didn’t do housework for first 4 weeks also. it was a slow recovery and the first 3 weeks were the worst definitely (couldn’t miss a painkiller) I had to build up walking stamina gradually also.. so I would at least arrange to take the 6 weeks off work and reassess then. I will probably end up taking about 10 weeks off.. My work have been great thankfully and I am still so glad I had the op!

Annab1983 · 07/03/2021 14:53

To add I also had excision of endometriosis during the op so my recovery/pain levels would have been affected by that also I would think..

AdditionalCharacter · 07/03/2021 14:59

I had a full hysterectomy at 36. I retained my ovaries though, so no hormone therapy needed (yet) but was told I'd go into menopause earlier than the average.

No complications following surgery apart from constipation form the pain relief.

Re sex life, for the first year, certain positions were uncomfortable , but we worked out what ones were better. No other issues around that.

mackerelontoast · 08/03/2021 20:46

Thanks for the information all. Really helpful.
Sorry to piggyback on your thread @Ghostlyfeet. Hope you are feeling better about the op. Have you got a date yet? I was told there was a waiting list of 3 months usually but is a bit longer right now because of COVID.
As you mentioned earlier, another worry is reduced libido. Anyone else got any positive experiences of this after having ovaries removed too?

Ghostlyfeet · 09/03/2021 20:42

Not at all @mackerelontoast
No date as yet. Still waiting!!
