Severe Thrush

Hey Everyone,

I've had thrush for 2 weeks now. What started out as itchy and sore has now made my vagina red raw and burning 24/7. Its horrendous and at times I can barely make it through the day because of the pain.
The first few days of this mess I used canestan cream and a clotrimazole pessary, which caused an allergic reaction and gave me sores and bleeding around my vagina🙃.
I stopped using everything left it a few days, then went back to the GP who gave me fluconazole tablets but that has done sod all.

It is definitely thrush as I have been tested for everything including STIs and genital herpes (I have been to the GUM clinic who did not think it was herpes).
I'm now going to try gyno-daktarin cream and was just wondering if anybody has had any luck with this? I'm at my wits end with it and I'm not sure how much longer I can go on with this.

Have you been swabbed for thrush? Sorry if that sounds daft but you say you’ve been swabbed for everything else - have they actually swabbed for thrush?

I have bouts of neverending very severe thrush and I have low oestrogen / peri menopause stuff going on (I’m 40) so the dryness makes everything worse. I get Ovestin internal oestrogen cream prescribed and find that helps along with Replens on the days I don’t use the Ovestin - Replens is hormone free but it’s the oestrogen in the Ovestin that makes the biggest difference. Also, I find canestan internal cream pre filled applicator better than any pessaries etc (they don’t even dissolve for me).

Failing that you may just need a much longer, stronger course of Fluconazole.

Make sure you are taking lots of probiotics as well. I drink 2 yakults a day and find that helps.

I think it’s time to go back to the GP and ask for another, or alternate course of meds. Wishing you better soon, that sounds awful.

Also - get some bloods done. Severe thrush can point to diabetes, anaemia or various other autoimmune conditions.

Thank you for responding to my post!
I'm 27, so I'm not sure vaginal dryness is an issue, although I'm sure now because my vagina is so swollen it probably is part of the problem.

I've been swabbed 3 times for thrush, the first 2 came back as thrush and the 3rd one came back as negative. Although I suspect that is probably because I used a canestan pessary 2 nights before the third test.

My GPs don't have a clue so I'm going to have to pay to see a private specialist because this is ruining my life. I'm a single mum and struggling to care for my daughter atm!

Hi I can relate. I get thrush every period yes your read it right!!!

It’s a friggen pain in the vagina. Mine is triggered by my hormones but my pop tends to manage it ok.

I’ve been tested by my gp and it has been confirmed so just ensure you know it’s thrush. I was given oral thrush medicine to take for a month however I took a reaction as my lips (on face) had slight swelling. So now I only use the cream.

I found the oral pill works really well combined with the external cream.
