Coil is driving me mad

Had Levosert coil (mirena) since mid Oct last yr. Since then, I can honestly say I’ve had about 3 weeks maximum with no bleeding or spotting. At the start of January, I had 2 weeks free of anything, then my second period on the coil started. It is now day 10 and I’m still having red bleeding. Admittedly it is half the amount I usually get, so the coil has lessened my flow, but my periods usually finish after 7 days. I still have cramps and am tired of wearing a pad. My coil threads are all over the place inside and I think I can feel a couple of little bumps on the edge of the opening to my cervix. I wish I’d never had the bloody thing fitted. It’s not for contraception, it’s because I was having irregular bleeding and the hope was it would stop my periods. Not looking likely at this rate!!

Please someone tell me their experience was the same but then it suddenly was the most wonderful thing in the world.

Oh and also I have never had sore nipples the week before a period before but I did this time. They were so sensitive and hard a lot of the time. I had to hold my boobs every time I went down stairs. So the coil is definitely messing about with my hormones etc. Starting to feel really down about it all.

Anyone got any advice?

Get it removed! I also had one fitted to "resolve" heavy bleeding caused by fibroids and my experience was similar. Hardly had any days completely free of bleeding or spotting, heavy days were still heavy and needed tranexamic acid to function "normally" and i had cramps like i'd never had in my life before. It's sold as the "cure all" to period problems and I honestly think Dr's push it because it's relatively cheap and a "one off" install cost for 5 years. I went to back to my GP about it after I'd given it 6 months to settle down and it hadn't. They sent me for an ultrasound to check it was in the right position (it was) and then I was another 6 months or so of going back n forth to them until they eventually referred me to gynae consultant but before i got an appointment I had such a heavy bleed that it came out! I never noticed at the time but we assume that's where it went!

I had a similar experience with the mirena. I had never been keen on the idea of having one anyway but reluctantly agreed to give it a try after years of heavy flooding periods. I didn’t need it for contraception.

It was inserted during a hysteroscopy in December 2019 but never settled. I began with a period that lasted 6 months!! During that time I did really want to get it removed, but the first lockdown happened, everything non-essential closed down and I was stuck with it.

Then I did have about two months when I was more or less clear last summer, which offered me a glimmer of hope. But it wasn’t to be. From September (I think) onwards periods began again, heavily. The one I had this January was like a haemorrhage and frightened me.

That was when I phoned my GP and called time on the mirena. She agreed, gave me an appointment to come in and removed it without question. She has referred me back to gynaecology. I am still waiting to hear back from them.

I lasted 13 months with it. I regretted trying it and will never have another.

I was so sick of mine i pulled it out myself. Obviously I don't recommend doing that (!!!) But I would never, ever get another one. I felt like a weight had been lifted as soon as It was gone.

I know what you mean about a weight being lifted.

I've had plenty of bleeding since mine was removed, but I still feel relieved. I've just been out to check our postbox and I have just received my appointment for an ultrasound scan, so maybe things are moving.

I did exactly the same after my GP told me to 'stick with it' for another 6 months. I hated the thing, bled continually and felt so much better once it was out. The bleeding stopped within 10 days.

I had spotting (usually panty shield type amount) every week for nearly 9 months having had it put in for heavy periods. It was very irritating but since then I’ve hardly had anything. That was 5 years ago and I’m now on my second one so I’m a happy customer!

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 04/02/2021 19:08

I really am torn about what to do. Today is day 13, yesterday and all of this morning my period had stopped. But then this afternoon I have started bleeding again like a day 1. I could cry. I miss intimacy with my dh, I miss being able to go to bed with no knickers on, and I miss feeling clean. I looked on the leaflet for the coil and it does mention that periods may be longer in the first 6 months but still, I’m so fed up. I wish dr appointments were normal, then I could chat with someone about it all. With my kids being home all day I wouldn’t be able to go to an appointment on my own anyway. I wish I’d never had it fitted.

You can speak to them about it but you are likely to get a phone consultation first. Tell them how you are feeling and if you are certain you want to have it removed ask for an appointment.

You might have to be a bit pushy about it through. Doctors (some of them) can be rather reluctant to remove it and that was one of the things I had against the mirena coil - being reliant on someone else to remove it if I decided it wasn't for me. A lack of control over my own body. Lockdown also made me feel trapped last year.

I'm so thankful mine has gone. 13 months and it didn't resolve any of my issues. I felt very pissed off.

It is touted as the panacea to absolutely everything in women's health. I don't doubt it works for some, but not for me.

GoodbyeToCare · 04/02/2021 20:13

When mine was put in (and I was reluctant to have it) I asked my gynaecologist if I didn't like it could I have it out? He assured me I could but in practise this was much more difficult. My GP kept harping on about how the Mirena had reduced hysterectomy numbers and didn't want to hear why I wanted it out. I wouldn't recommend anyone DIY it but I felt I had no other option. Definitely push to have it out!

Loads of women on here have had similar experiences. It is great for many but definitely not for all.

I bled daily last year for months and had coil fitted. Mine was heavy most days and coil fitted august.

Continued bleeding and it was so heavy in October the coil came out.

Started northisterone daily and had new coil a month ago. When I went to 1 northisterone I started to spot evenings due to drop in hormones.

Took last northisterone yesterday and light bleeding to day and very very bloated.

I'm dreading how long I'll bleed for (heavy or light) before it settles.

I was told can take 3-6 months and up to a year and they can stop.

This coil feels much more comfortable than the last where I could also feel lumps on cervix but scan showed it in correct place.

I think they try it as some of kind of cure but I'm not sure it's always the answer and I also get fed up of pads everyday.

I had the levosert coil fitted almost 3 month's ago. It was for hrt purposes to use alongside the estrogen patches. I'm 56, I started on hrt when I was 50 ,I was taking femoston conti tablets with no bleeding up until a year ago. I was getting vaginal dryness so my GP prescribed oestrogen vaginal cream. I started getting cramps , then eventually started bleeding every 3 weeks. The GP referred me for a scan. The scan revealed that I had thickened womb lining ,a biopsy was taken. Fortunately they didn't find any cancerous cells. The gyny recommended the mirena coil be fitted to thin the womb lining. I was hesitant to have it fitted because I have a long history of depression, and couldn't take the pill because of the progesterone side effects. However I was frightened of getting womb cancer, so I had it fitted. I'm not lying when I say that I've turned from a happy person to a really depressed negative per person almost since the day it's been fitted. I've had 9 weeks of constant bleeding, wearing pads. The bleeding has now stopped a couple of weeks ago. But I'm still feeling so negative and down. I'm sick of feeling this way and I just want to have it taken out so I can get back to feeling better again. But I'm frightened about the cancer risk. Any advice would be appreciated. Ps, also have episodes of rage which I've never experienced b4. Also sore boob's, pains in my legs & constant bloating!!
