Cervical polyp

Hello! At my recent smear the dr said she found a cervical polyp and that I'd be referred to gyne and to expect my letter for referral soon. This was all a shock me, I'd no symtoms at al! I have a young baby and honestly this is taking over my life and making me worry so much, I don't know what to expect. Has anyone had any experience with them? The removal etc? Dr wasn't very helpful. Only told me what she saw then sent me on my way basically. TIA xx

Very common and harmless 99.9% of the time.
We can all have polyps anywhere, almost. Just a dangly bit of skin/tissue.
If it bleeds or looks very big, they can remove them usually without a GA if they are easily accessible. Bigger ones might need a local or a GA.
They will do histology on it once it's removed but that standard.

I had a cervical polyp removed recently. It was not painful at all. There was some discharge afterwards for around a week.
I believe most can just be pinched off with forceps, but if the stalk originates from inside the cervix you may need some anaesthetic.
It felt very similar to going for a routine smear and I was able to watch on a screen too which I quite enjoyed Grin
They sent it off to be tested, but reassured me at the appointment that they can normally tell by the shape and general look of it if it’s more sinister.
Try not to worry too much, they’re very common and really easily fixed

I had a bleed during my first pregnancy which turned out to be a polyp. I was booked in to have it removed after birth but then when they checked, it had come off on its own during the labour. This was 12 years ago. Then a couple of years ago I had bleeding in between periods which the doctors thought might be because I had a couple more polyps. I had these removed under local anaesthetic. It was all fine. Don’t worry, it’s nothing to stress about. You don’t have to have them removed if you don’t want to and they’re not causing you any issues.

I had this picked up at my first smear after my daughter was born, about 3 months. They made an appointment with gynae and by the time it came around a few weeks later the polyp had gone, so no action required. I read that it’s usually a painless to procedure to remove them anyway. The exam (and the smear) were both a bit painful tho, being soon after birth! I’m sure you’ll be fine, good luck

Thank you so much, this has really helped in regards to my nerves, of course I've spent the past week googling like mad which hasn't helped. But you have ♡

Sorry, I'm new to mumsnet so don't really understand replying to msgs etc. But thank you all for replying back to me. I've been googling like crazy ever since being told about them and I know it's the worst thing to do. Thanks for sharing your experiences on them, it's really calmed my nerves (I tend to overthink everything and have a head that automatically goes to worst case scenario!) ♡

Hi did you get sorted?
I've just replied to another thread but I had one last year. Mine was very large the size of my pinky finger hanging down and caused me a lot of anxiety. It was removed easily it was a very quick procedure, surgery, cautherised off, had local anaesthetic didnt feel a thing, no issues afterwards. The polyp and tissue surrounding all came back normal histology. That was the worst part the waiting. Mainly because mine was quite large and not the more common type of smaller ones. My doctor dismissed me 3 times and didn't even refer me to gynae (ive since moved doctors, best decision ive made recently ) but she was horrible. Told me off for getting anxious over it.
I know the anxiety it causes, I trawlled through posts on here looking for reassuring posts when I was going through it last year, so now always try to help others going through same. They are very common xxx

Roundfacee · 08/02/2021 20:51

@Jenibluebell I can't believe you got told off for being anxious about it, so glad you switched Drs! Thank you for your reply. I'm still waiting on my appointment letter from gyne. Reading your post has really reassured me on the whole thing, although it is something that's always in the back of my mind! My Dr didn't say if mine was large or small, I had 0 symtoms of it. The waiting for the referral is the worst bit about it... and I'm sure waiting on results will be equally as bad! I'm glad everything was OK for you! Being a woman sucks sometimes 😫😂 xxx

I was worried sick about my cervical polyp. However when I went to have it removed it had fallen off of its own accord.
Apparently a tampon or intercourse knock it off.
Mine was small diagnosed at my routine smear but it bled a lot .
Very common.
And as others have said you don't have to have it removed .
Gps like to recommend removal but some friends declined and they went of own accord.

Roundfacee · 19/02/2021 13:22

@KittyKat70

I just got my letter for Tuesday in outpatients. However they said this is just a consultation? Nothing actually being done. Is this standard? I'm not sure as nobody I ask can't give me a straight answer. Lol.

Im sure you were relieved when they told you it had fallen off itself! Ideally I'd like that to be the case with me too 😂

Just seen this thread! I'm 23 weeks pregnant and keep bleeding so keep having to go and have anti d as baby is different blood group, they found a cervical polyp, so I'm on a sex ban as if it bleeds it means I have to go to hospital! They won't take it off till baby is 3 months so got a while to wait

ValentinePomLePom · 19/02/2021 15:07

I think if it's an external one if they examine you they will remove it.
If it's stalk is into the cervical os you might need to go back .
As it more of a minor op.
Maybe they aren't doing any invasive stuff due to COVID ?
But will do the consultation
Either way try not to worry
No worse than a smear
And gynae are always far better at examinations than gps and nurses.
