Second opinion about breast lump

Sausages100 · 23/01/2021 20:53

Hi,
Had an appt with breast clinic yesterday.
I found a lump 2 weeks ago, which seemed to disappear. I have had a very lumpy right boob recently, very painful etc.
I have not had a GP feel my breasts due to covid.
When I got to the clinic, the consultant gave me a 5 second examination. I should have pressed for a more detailed exam, I said that I thought there were 2 lumps but not sure.
Had mammogram which was ok. Then an ultrasound where they scanned where I thought the lump was. Everything ok. Had a second ultrasound due to the sonographer wanting to recheck, but it was a different area.Again ok.
Afterwards consultant just said its glandular and I could go. He didnt even look at me.
I can still feel a lump, popping in and out of tissue. It really hurts.
I'm angry because I never even had a thorough breast exam.
I know I was nervous and might not have explained myself brilliantly, but not happy.
Cant stop worrying
My husband thinks I should have another ultrasound to put my mind at rest.
I have HA and worried GP will get angry, but my husband said if Im not happy Im entitled to a second opinion.
I'm convinced there is a lump.

To be honest I would prefer the ultrasound and mammogram over the examination anyway. I would consider them to be more thorough.

You had two ultrasound, and a mammogram, so I would imagine you're absolutely fine.

Do you suffer from health anxiety?

I only say that because I suffer from really bad health anxiety, and often feel like things have been missed, and that I have to do rechecking.

I also have incredibly bumpy boobs! So mean in this respectfully and with sympathy X

I think you need to let this go.

You’ve had all the tests which indicate there is nothing wrong.

Go and have a cup of tea and enjoy your day.

Skyliner001 · 24/01/2021 09:45

Sorry!! I missed you said you had HA!

Skyliner001 · 24/01/2021 09:48

This is classic HA. Another ultrasound will give you temporary relief but then you will circle back or onto something else. I do emphasise though, but short of paying for another ultrasound you won't be able to be referred again as there is nothing there that is bad. The reason you can still feel something is because there is some tissue there but it's normal.

Sending empathy anyway. Join us on the health anxiety thread 😊

But the consultant never felt the lump, he barely examined me.

This is a definite lump, that stings

The doctor feeling the lump isn’t nearly as thorough and definitive as the mammogram and the ultrasound. Those are The Tests. You’re fine.

PotteringAlong · 24/01/2021 09:55

He didn’t need to feel the lump though because the mammogram and 2 ultrasounds confirmed that it was glandular and you are completely fine.

Skyliner001 · 24/01/2021 09:56

Yes, as @Rainallnight says. You are fixating on the least important of the three things due to your HA. That's feeding into your idea that something has been missed. Also classic HA.

I was at the clinic a few months ago and would have forgone consultant for ultrasound any day of the week. Consultant could not tell me what my lump was, ultrasound did. (Giant cyst, drained)

Skyliner001 · 24/01/2021 09:57

Yes @PotteringAlong exactly this. I also wasn't examined after the draining of the cyst.

CherryRoulade · 24/01/2021 10:02

An expert wouldn’t need long to find the lump. Mine knew within about 30 seconds what it was, despite it being tiny to the touch.

They wouldn’t act without the confirmation of an ultrasound or mammogram though, obviously.

The examination really only indicates a need to proceed to diagnostic testing. If ultrasound and mammogram are normal you’ll have to accept that. You were concerned, you sought advice, you were referred, you were tested. You know need to get on with your life.

Sausages100 · 24/01/2021 16:26

I'm worried that he barely felt my breast. This lump has been in and out of the tissue. Not sure if it was there. Now I can feel it and it is different to the rest of breast tissue. Everyone I know had a full breast examination on both breasts.
Surely if I'm not sure, he should have checked.
How do I know if this lump has been scanned?
The whole things a mess, I wish I'd never gone.

I had a breast examination 4 weeks ago and again this week by 2 different consultants. It was literally 10 seconds poking where I said the lump was and then in to ultrasound. They do hundreds of examinations and I trust that they know what they were feeling.

Chewbecca · 24/01/2021 16:35

The mammogram and ultrasound are surely far more informative than a manual examination?

DinosaurDiana · 24/01/2021 16:39

It probably hurts because you keep prodding it, plus you had all that done at the hospital.
Do you still have periods ? If so do not touch it again until after your next period has finished, then see if it’s still there.

PotteringAlong · 24/01/2021 16:44

How do I know if this lump has been scanned?

Because you’ve had a mammogram and 2 ultrasounds. Do you really think doctors should do detailed and unnecessary intimate exams of people’s breasts?

Standrewsschool · 24/01/2021 17:00

One mammogram and two ultrasound scans. I think that’s pretty conclusive. I’m not even sure they would give you another mammogram so soon.

Sausages100 · 28/01/2021 23:20

The lump that came and went has now gone solid constantly, has got harder and the pain is worse than ever. The pain is so bad. My nipple has also started having smears of blood coming out on my bra.
Why did this happen after the breast clinic?????
I dont want to phone the doctor, because I suffer from HA and they dismiss me.
This is making me really ill.

CherryRoulade · 29/01/2021 08:50

You do need to go back. There are many benign causes and impossible to even begin to say without knowing more about your age, whether you’ve breastfed, the position etc.

Take a bra with blood in to show them. You might get the breast clinic to see you again by phoning the secretary. They’re generally pretty good.

Breast cancer is quite a long way down the list of painful conditions that cause bleeding.

Soontobe60 · 29/01/2021 08:55

You are getting yourself worked up for absolutely no reason. The investigations you have had done are definitive. The lump you can feel in your breast is not a tumour.
Feel free to pay privately to have the same tests repeated, but please don't waste NHS resources by trying to get them done for free.

RedWelliesAreHot · 29/01/2021 14:13

if you have bleeding from your nipple and it's not from a scratch or something, call your GP and talk to them. That is actual evidence that something is not right. Just be straightforward about it.
