Starting Microgynon (or any pill) on the first day of your period - can it stop it?

I was due my period Christmas day. In the afternoon the light flow started. It was a normal first day for me with just pinkish loss on wiping, not enough for a pad. I then normally go on to bleed heavily day 2 and 3 sometimes 4, then lighter again for 2 or 3 more days.
As me and my partner have finally managed to resume something of a normal sex life (don't ask!), I wanted to go back on contraception. I've previously been on microgynon and was given this by the GP to start on the first day of my period. Well, my first day was as above. And then... it just didn't happen. No proper bleeding. Just occasional light pink mucous on wiping. Pads dry completely. 5 days and nothing is happening. I
Has the microgynon caused this? I know you normally have 7 pill free days and your period generally starts a few days in to it which means the microgynon needs to be stopped in order to bleed (and taking 2 packs consecutively will stop your period). However I can't help but worry about where the hell my unfertilised egg and uterus lining are currently hiding 🙈.
I have of course done a pregnancy test (twice, on 27th and today) which were negative as expected.
But I'm generally worrying about why I am not having a period and if this is problematic. I don't want to bother the GP as I am guessing they won't know necessarily, nor care! Can anyone help?! I think I've answered my own question whilst typing this, but I'll post anyway just in case I'm wrong!

The hormones in the pill will have stopped your period happening as it should. Many people take the pill back to back so they don’t have periods and it’s safe to do this on the combined pill. Your period might be a bit heavier than normal next time you have one though

That's my assumption. I'm wondering if I should stop it then allow my period to happen as I already have heavy periods and have been housebound in the past due to flooding and passing huge clots. I can start it again at the end of my period and use additional protection I guess.

Does the leaflet say to start it on the 1st day of your period? If so then maybe just stick with it. If there are a few different options for starting it and you would feel happier having your period then you could stop and restart later. It could take a few days of stopping for your period to arrive again

Just keep taking it. The pill will have likely stopped your period due to the hormones. If you stop it now there is no guarantee your period will restart as the pill will have delayed it.

Also the pill will likely lighten your periods a bit so your next one shouldn’t be too awful. I’d probably just keep taking it

It gives options on when to start. The perk to starting on the first day of your period is that you are fully protected and no need for extra precautions. If started after that you need to use extra protection for 7 days.

I think now you have already started it you might put your hormones out of whack if you suddenly come off it and then go back on it a week or so. My periods were really heavy before it and have been a lot lighter on it so your next one shouldn’t be as bad as you think

dementedpixie · 30/12/2020 12:13

If you stop now then you'll mess up the days you take the pill as you won't have enough pills in the pack to take for a full 21 days and will need to borrow from another pack

dementedpixie · 30/12/2020 12:15

And the bleeding at the end of a pack of pills is not a proper period but a 'withdrawal bleed'
