Dealing with normal vaginal discharge that discolours PJ and pants

Ok this has come up tonight with eldest DD who is on the verge of starting periods. (14/15). She is getting a lot of discharge and is asking about pants and PJ or staining on pants. I know there isn't a miracle solution to the problem -but I can't be the only one who suffers from discoloured pants. I have to replace them all at least twice a year. I have no thrush or STI just a heavy discharge.

She's had it for about 18 months and periods haven't started yet but......
I'm over 40 and started my periods at 16.
I have a heavy normal discharge -no STI etc but it has stained my pants and PJ for years. I hate wearing pants and PJ together. I replace pants regularly and mainly buy cheap PJ -as I think it is pick your choices -PJ they stain or you wear pants and they stain or a pantyliner. Someone suggested panty liners about 10 years ago -every day but it bugs me as I just hate it sitting there like a san towel on my pants.

Apart from steering clear on black pants -as the discharge soon bleaches them to brown crotch -has anyone come across anyway of dealing with it? Sleep nude is a solution but not for us.

I guessing nighties. But DD likes her PJ.

She has some lovely PJ and lounge wear for christmas and doesn't want to wreck them.
I said nice lounge wear over PJ and buy slightly bigger PJ so they aren't tight. etc

What does everyone else do? Sigh and the same as us. etc or some really good solution?

Pant liners ?

FippertyGibbett · 26/12/2020 18:00

Sorry, see you mentioned that. You can get some that are really thin, like an extra later in your knickers.

CodenameVillanelle · 26/12/2020 18:00

Just wear liners, sorry
For pyjamas I can't wear pants with them so I get them in a large size so they aren't in contact with my nethers

Downandupdownandup · 26/12/2020 18:02

That's what I've suggested and I think that's the only way forward or not to wear anything PJ in bed etc. or a nightie.

I think for me to wear the panty liners, I would need to wear pants, panty liners, pants and PJ -don't want to, too much in the gential area. But that's the only choice -right?

I think this is what I have tried to do buy bigger -same with pants. I said to her to wipe well before bed and when she gets up and throughout the day etc.

Dark colours?

Onedropbeat · 26/12/2020 18:09

Dark colours are worse because women’s discharge is bleaching

It’s natural. She shouldn’t be ashamed or embarrassed by stained undergarments

It’s perfectly normal and she would be healthier without the panty liners

Downandupdownandup · 26/12/2020 18:09

You see I find dark colours bleach. Black being the worse -it goes brown and brown goes pink! I have had black and brown velvet PJ in the past and they did not last long.

Washable pantyliners so you’re not using plastics every day. Imsee vimsee do some nice thin liners, they don’t feel like plastic sanitary towels and you just Chuck them in the washing machine.

TreacleHart · 26/12/2020 18:12

When you say stain, so you mean that ? Or are you really saying it eventually changed the colour of the pants / pjs ?
Have you ever looked into that you might have overly acidic / or alkaline discharge so what is actually happening is you are colour changing your clothes.

LucyFox · 26/12/2020 18:16

I have this problem with pants (only wear black) & tbh have given up caring as I can’t do anything about it ....
Never have a problem with PJs but I do wear them loose - don’t like tight PJs!

I have a natural low pH. So it bleaches my pants and crotch area. No BV, thrush etc

Off to google washable pantyliners -thanks!! good tip

Yes that’s exactly what happens, the fabric is affected & changes colour in certain areas, it’s not a surface stain you can wash out with Vanish!
longtompot · 26/12/2020 18:31

Bodyform do a very thin pant liner which you can't feel at all. There are also ones in Waitrose which are biodegradable and are very thin. I really do sympathise as I have the same issue.

picklemewalnuts · 26/12/2020 18:45

I've heard there's a homeopathic remedy- but never cared enough to follow up.

BadgertheBodger · 26/12/2020 18:48

What about the thinnest ones of period knickers? Something like Modibodi? They do a range for teens which might be worth a look

Pandabuzz · 26/12/2020 18:51

This this is what @longtompot was referring to. I don’t use them now but have previously and they are really great. More of a cotton feel material so none of the plasticity sweatiness you can get with some! They are so thin she probably won’t even notice them! www.superdrug.com/Toiletries/Feminine-Care/Panty-Liners/Bodyform-Micro-Pantyliners-22-Pack/p/846550

PS you sound like a lovely mum x

BitOfFun · 26/12/2020 18:53

I think it's a bit of a non-problem, tbh, unless you are going to be sitting in positions which display the crotch? I've certainly never thrown out perfectly good pyjamas for this reason.

missbunnyrabbit · 26/12/2020 18:55

Ugh I've always had this problem. So much discharge all the time! I have always used thin pantyliners or a small tampon.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/12/2020 19:35

I think you either have to accept wearing panty liners-

Natracare do ones with organic cotton , no chemicals and with no plastic backing

OR buy very cheap cotton knickers and just ditch them when they are stained. You can almost boil-wash at 60 or 70C and if you soak first in Vanish it ought to remove most of the stains.

They will be clean and no one is seeing them!

JinglingHellsBells · 26/12/2020 19:38

TBH I really don't see the issue with stained gussets unless someone is on a hot date and then you'd wear 'special' pants!

As for PJs- well, if they are clean, why is she worried?

luckiestgirl · 26/12/2020 19:42

Just have stained pants, who cares what colour your gussets are? I can’t see the problem

viccat · 26/12/2020 19:47

Reusable panty liners seems like a good option, much nicer than the plastic ones.

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 26/12/2020 19:51

I think a zen like acceptance is the answer. Bit of bleaching, nbd.

BrutusMcDogface · 26/12/2020 19:54

I’ve never heard or experienced this! I am one of those weirdos who wears pants with pjs though (shock! Horror!)

I was going to suggest the period pants, too. But they’d probably get discoloured and they are ££.
