Sore boob

poachedeggsandmushrooms · 11/12/2020 21:41

My right boob sometimes feels a bit sore, it comes and goes, doesn't seem to be related to my periods as I can have it any time really. No lumps that I can feel, no changes to appearance of my breast, not even a bad pain, but it is there as a background pain on and off.
I'm 46 and not on any contraception, I was on the mini pill but stopped taking it a few months ago as it was affecting my mood.
I know none of you can diagnose me but just looking for any similar stories and wondering if its worth ringing the doctors.
Thanks.

I've started having this recently. I've been told it could be caused by the contraceptive pill I'm on so I'm going to stop taking it and see if it helps. If if goes I will start taking another kind to see if that helps.
How long again did you stop taking yours? Could the hormones still be in your system? Other than that I can't really help other than to say me too!

poachedeggsandmushrooms · 11/12/2020 21:53

plixy thank you for your reply. I've been off the pill for around 6 months so I don't think its that. I hope you're ok and find some answers. I don't fit any of the criteria on the NHS website to contact GP so I'm really not sure what to do for the best.

Also its not bad enough to need painkillers so I really don't know🤷🏻‍♀️

I would get anything off or different checked out. You know your body and what is right and what is strange for you.

Yes you are right, I think I will phone the GP surgery on Monday.

I’m interested in this. I had a sore right breast for about 2 months but then it stopped. I’m 45. Fine now 🤷🏻‍♀️

Weird. I'll post an update when I've rung them.

You know what the NHS say - any unexplained changes in your breast needs to be checked by your GP. It's most likely nothing, but must be checked out.

Redannie118 · 13/12/2020 20:19

If its any comfort, i was diagnosed with breast cancer in April and it was totally painless. Its very common to get sudden ,unexplained( and often very painful) breast pain while perimenopausal. As pps have said though always get any new unexplained symptoms checked out. Give your GP a ring tomorrow. Good luck.

blametheparents · 13/12/2020 20:21

I have a sore left breast!
Between us we make a pair!
I went to the docs. Doc wasn’t worried, but referred me for a mammogram anyway (I’m 48 now, was 46 at the time) and all clear.
Having said all that, if you’re worried then speak to your doctor.

Thanks for the latest messages, reassuring to read. I am waiting on a call back from the GP so will update when I've heard.
@Redannie118 I hope you are OK, thank you for sharing your experience Thanks

@blametheparents thanks so much for that reply, its helping to put my mind at rest a bit, feeling a bit sick with worry today to be honest.

I had/have this. I went to my gp they did a breast exam and sent me on my way. No lumps no change etc so she wasn’t very worried said it could be my bra or something hormonal. I’ve started noting when it happens to see if there is a pattern. It is very worrying but my gp said usually there would be other symptoms along with pain to start getting concerned. I haven’t been on birth control in 4 years but have finished breast feeding relatively recently. Good luck with your appointment.

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 14/12/2020 14:31

I have this and so did my mother.

Got it checked and at the time was told something about aging ligaments or losing collagen (can't remember exactly, but know it was her another charming aspect of getting older)

poachedeggsandmushrooms · 14/12/2020 17:31

So a little update, the GP rang and said it's usually not something to worry about but she's made an appointment to see me tomorrow morning. She was a bit abrupt and I'm feeling anxious so hope she's nice when I go in! I know they're under so much pressure right now, I'll just feel better to get it out of the way.
Thanks for all the reassuring messages, very much appreciated Smile

No it's not usually something to worry about but they absolutely should be checking it out thoroughly. Pain in one boob is not "normal" I had my scan and bloods done within 2 weeks.

Got the all clear btw! I have suffered with chronic mastalgia since puberty but this was a different pain for me.

glosbucks · 14/12/2020 17:44

I had pain in one boob quite regularly on and off from age 45-47 ish. I used to get really worried. I was perimenopausal and when my periods had stopped for a year the pain stopped. That was about six months ago. I've recently started HRT (now 48) and the pain is back.
I've had mammogram and been checked out and all fine.
I've put it down to hormones.

poachedeggsandmushrooms · 14/12/2020 18:15

These messages are making me feel better. Thank you😊

So another quick and final (hopefully!) update. Saw the GP this morning, she gave me an examination and said she couldn't find anything untoward and that the breast clinic wouldn't want to see me unless the pain was accompanied by another symptom such as a lump or change in shape etc. She said it's almost certainly to do with age and hormones and recommended evening primrose oil and/or ibuprofen to help with the pain.
So I am feeling much relieved this morning and am very glad I went, and hopefully this thread can reassure others experiencing similar. It is so tempting to bury your head in the sand (well it is for me anyway!) but I knew I had to get it checked out.

I had this a few years ago, just in one breast. I googled a bit and found it could be caffeine related. Went onto decaffeinated coffee and it went. I did go to the doctors to have it checked as well, but he was happy there was nothing wrong.
