Fibroids

notacatperson1 · 22/11/2020 22:36

In February I had a hysterectomy for fibroids. The largest fibroid was 39 mm I was cut horizontally, when I spoke to the surgeon he said it was because it was too large to be taken out vertically. Does anyone know if this is correct?

My hysterectomy for fibroids and ovarian cysts was done horizontally. My surgeon said that was the preferred way for open surgery because it can be placed low near the bikini line. The vertical one would have gone from bikini line to tummy button which I definitely didn't like the sound of especially since I already have a large vertical scar on my stomach.

I got told it depends on the surgeon how they do it. I had a consultation with two. Both had different methods. Both keyhole. My largest fibroid is 9cm.

I’ve hit perimenopause so I’m hoping I won’t need operated on now.

Ah, so my surgeon did warn me that if he wasn't able to do it horizontally due to size, he'd revert to vertically as a last resort. He was hoping to use my old c-section scar but had to go up slightly from there for a bigger, better placed incision.

Elieza I hope you avoid a hysterectomy i never thought I would end up having one. I think this is part of the reason it upsets me so much xx

Thanks OP. I wouldn’t mind the results of the operation. No probs with scars. No problem with my bits being removed if I needed a hysterectomy Psychologically I’d be ok.

But I’m not good with pain and live alone so that was one of the reasons I was glad when they said to wait a while and see if my hormones changing would help. I’d have been scared to do anything round the house in case I burst my stitches.

Does your scar upset you OP?

The thing that upsets me is the fact that stupidity I thought it would be a vertical scar and it is a horizontal one.
As far as the operation it was a full hysterectomy which I had on the Thursday morning and I was out on Saturday. I really dislike hospitals so I requested a early discharge. I did have my husband to look after me. However I was taking very short walks by Monday and met friends in the park for coffee on Friday. I had to have blood thinner injections for 28 days. I am 56 and was still having regular periods x

I don't I'm afraid. The main reason for the surgery was for the dermoid cysts which were giving me bladder problems and back pain so I was just happy to get that sorted out really.
