Marina coil advise

I've been advised by me gynaecologist to have a merina coil fitted as I've been experiencing irregular bleeding, I've read nothing but bad things about it, she's not given me another option I feel abit confused and kind of put in a dilemma I didn't expect to be in. Sad

I can only speak from personal experience but I’ve had 3 and not had any problems with any of them. They completely solved my heavy bleeding issues to the extent that I only rarely have a period at all and I didn’t get any weight gain or hormonal mood changes.

The mirena seems to be being pushed as the cure all of gynae problems. I had one fitted for heavy bleeding caused by fibroids and i'm afraid it caused me no end of issues - worst pain than i'd ever had before, almost constant bleeding and spotting, and I'm sure it affected my mood too. The issue is that GPs seems unwilling / unable to refer you to gynae at the hospital until they've tried all options available to them. Have they investigated if there's an underlying cause for your irregular bleeding?

I was told a couple of months ago I have a 5cm ovarian cyst so I presumed it was this causing my problems, bleeding back ache cramps, was referred to gyno and she said it's not the cyst but they will rescan me in a few months to check the size if not gone, but it was down to a hormone imbalance and that to stop this i would need the coil, to me it's not solving the problem but just stopping the symptoms.

I had Mirena twice and apart from initial cramping which was quite intense I did not have any issues.
My OH complained of 'pricking' during sex so if you still sexually active, ask for threads to be trimmed properly.

What emmathedilemma wrote. Mirena is not suitable for all women to have.

How irregular is your bleeding and how heavy is it?. Something is causing this and it is certainly in your interests to have this properly addressed. The mirena here may well only address the symptom, not the cause.

Saxineno · 10/11/2020 14:21

I love my mirena! Stopped my periods and cramping, never have to think about it.

I had cysts before and was recommended by my gyne. No issues since.

When I came to thinking about the coil ALL the only first-hand info I could find on it was all scary - if it's working perfectly people don't tend to go online and write about it.

I ended up getting the Jaydess which is very similar to the Mirena but lasts 3 years and a bit smaller (haven't had kids). I had absolutely no issues with it and only took it out due to wanting to start TTC.

Can't comment on it in terms of it solving your medical issues as I'm not a doctor, but don't discount it based on bad internet reviews!

I had heavy periods before getting the mirena fitted and it didn't change them at all. I still had regular, heavy periods and spotting. On top of this it affected my sex drive, it irritated my partner (he got rashes from the strings) and after having it removed my periods have got worse... they're every three weeks now and I have heavy clotting which stops me from going out for a day (which I never had before).

I've now just found out I have fibroids and a polyp on my uterus which was never there before. Might not be related but either way the coil was not good for me.

In saying that I have a friend who loves it - her periods have stopped and she's had no problems whatsoever so it really does seem to depend on the person.

Holothane · 10/11/2020 15:26

I’ve had a polyp removed and now have a fibroid my pain has been hell for months now, I have ibuprofen now as well as paracetamol, long on going story.

haymumof2 · 10/11/2020 16:04

Don't really know if it's even worth trying for 6months. Il ring my doctor and speak to her. I really don't like taking tablets/contraception just doesn't seem like the solution. Plus I've just read that it's not recommended if your suffer from ovarian cysts.
