Only having ‘period’ at night - contraceptive implant

I’ve put period in brackets as I’m not 100% sure it actually is a period. I’ve had the contraceptive implant since my youngest son was born 4 years ago. As I haven’t been sexually active until about 10 months ago I completely forgot about it and never got round to getting it removed/ replaced. Since I have been with my partner we’ve been using condoms on the assumption that the implant is no longer active and I haven’t started the pill again as I’ve been waiting since then to get it removed (bloody CV holding everything up).

Anyway, about a 12-18 months ago my periods returned sporadically- never more than a light period every 2-3 months. For about 5 months now I’ve been waking in the middle of the night with my bed soaked in blood with enormous clots in. I’ve cleaned it all up and put a massive pad in which then get soaked through a couple more times in the night. I’ll obviously have a shower in the morning and put a fresh pad in which will then get a small amount of brown blood in during the morning, I’ll change it at lunch time and then it will be completely clean all afternoon.

This sometimes happens 3-4 nights in a row, never just a one off but it will also happen about once every 10 days. I’ve had a phone call appointment with my GP who didn’t seem concerned as she thinks it probably just the implant still giving off occasional hormones which then stops and my body reacts to it in the same way it would react to a break in taking the pill.

Since this has happened I’ve needed an iron infusion in August as I was so anaemic as a result and I’m feeling similar again now so waiting on the results of a blood test to see if I need another one.

I’m concerned as I’ve had to have my cervix lasered twice in the past due to cancerous cells. I’m not due a smear until next year but my GP has asked for me to be referred for one at the hospital but again due to delays it’s unlikely to be until early next year anyway Hmm.

I can’t keep up with the rate that I’m soaking through sheets. I’ve ruined my mattress even though I had a mattress topper on. One night my 4 to had snuck into bed with me and he woke up covered in blood and was terrified. It’s just awful and I don’t think my GP was fully listening to quite how much blood I was losing - she just kept saying ‘it always looks like more than it is’ and that as long as none of the clots were bigger than a 50p coin I shouldn’t worry.

Has anyone else had similar? Any suggestions on how I can get seen more quickly if you think I need to? I could probably afford to go private but I’m in the South West and the two BUPA hospitals nearest to me have been taken over by the NHS for the duration of CV.

If your GP thinks that your implant is not giving you adequate dosage of hormones then why is she not getting you a replacement???
In a way I agree with your GP , it does seem like your implant is no longer working which has caused your periods to return. And since your body is trying to go back to its natural rythm your hormonal cycle is still far from normal.
A heavy period caused by hormonal imbalance is the same as you describe. It starts/ stop during the day and when the flow comes everything seems gushing out. Can't your gp prescribe you some medicine to control the flow until your Gynaecologist appointment is sorted? If you are okay with ibuprofen then take 1-2 tablets before you go to sleep- that would take care of the flooding. Liquid ibuprofen lysine (nurofen fast acting) works better.
I understand your situation and as someone who has flooding periods you have my sympathy.
You can even go private if you want, nowadays a lot of Gynaecologist are offering video consultations if that suits your requirement.
