Endometrial ablation Surgery?

Finally managed to speak too a GP and get a referral to gynaecologist (though could take a while before I see anyone), go thinks I’m possibly looking at Endometrial ablation surgery. I have read a little bit about it and I’m hoping it will cure all my issues. Can anyone who has had this surgery let me know what to expect and tell me if it has worked for you or made things worse? At the moment I’m bleeding almost constantly and have very heavy painful periods, the gp suspects fibroids though I also have endometriosis symptoms. I will be having a pelvic scan before seeing gynaecologist.

Be aware that the pelvic scan may not detect any endometriosis deposits if they are there because they are very small. I have had more internal scans than I care to mention and NONE of them detected the endometriosis present throughout my uterine cavity. Both fibroids and endometriosis can cause heavy bleeding.

In my case such surgery has been successful to stop my constant bleeding partly as a result of estrogen/progesterone imbalance caused by both endometriosis and PCOS. A polyp that had regrown after previous surgery to remove it was also contributing to my non stop bleeding.

I was in and out of hospital in a day but I was operated on under general anaesthetic quite early in the day. Post surgery they wanted to ensure I could urinate and defecate without problems. Post op I felt very groggy and was left to sleep the anaesthetic off. My hips felt somewhat sore mainly because my legs were pulled about during the op. I was given a large bag of painkillers (only needed to take one though when I was at home) and some antibiotic tablets on discharge.

I was seen a few days post op as a follow up.

I had a diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy last September which resulted in ablations. They also found evidence of polyps from my biopsy that they couldn’t visibly see.

I went into shock during surgery so it was slightly rushed and that made my recovery not as easy going. Although, you should have minimal pain and bruising.

Before the op I was having such extreme bleeding I was having so much time off work for either pain or excessive bleeding to the point I’d stand up and be soaked in blood (charming). My first period after surgery was actually quite normal. Minimal blood loss and pain. Subsequent periods had been a lot better, it definitely worked. Although, if it is endometriosis causing your problems, the only way to stop it happening again is if they remove every bit of endometrium.

Good luck :)

Thank you, I’m not expecting the pelvic scan to show anything, I have had cysts before but not big enough to cause a problem.

At the moment the bleeding is stopping me from doing many things as it’s so heavy so I’m guessing worst case scenario would be surgery making no difference at all? I can’t really see it getting any worse.
GP thinks my symptoms are more fibroids rather than endometriosis due to the amount of bleeding.

I would imagine that they would find the cause during the surgery. Sometimes if it’s large fibroids they bring you round as you need to give separate consent to have them removed, and would have to have another op to get that sorted out. They may remove them at the time though.

I can’t imagine you wouldn’t get any relief whatsoever. Good luck Flowers
