Tranexamic acid

My 16 yr old DD has has heavy bleeding for last 3 weeks and last night we phoned OOH docs because of extremely sore pain. She has been prescribed tranxemic acid.

Anyone had this before, and did it work?

I was lucky enough to not be troubled with heavy bleeding much and certainly nothing like she's experiencing so can't really advise her.

I had it on prescription for years. My periods were awful and the pain was so bad they gave me mefanemic acid as well.

They give tranexamic to patients post op to stop bleeding also. It does work.

If she is a regular sufferer then do encourage her to ask the GP for a gynae referral. Period problems tend to be overlooked tbh. When I finally made it to gynae the poster in the waiting room saying “women don’t have to suffer with painful, heavy bleeding” made me laugh -if only!

I hope things ease for her soon with the tranexamic.

Yes I had it as.a teenager it used to be called ponstan and it really worked well. One of my dds took it in high school before she went on the pill her periods were horrendous.

Rumtopf · 26/09/2020 18:50

I had an allergic reaction to it. I now use Buscopan and codeine. Dd went on the mini pill and it was revolutionary for her.

Nope menefanemic is what I had.

Thanks everyone, just so awful seeing her suffering. She has the contraceptive implant which I think may be contributing to it. She has a 10 day dose of 6 tablets a day so fingers crossed it eases off a bit. I'll be pushing for her to get a gynae consult asap but with the way things are covid wise just now we couldnt even get an appointment with a nurse or doc hence having to phone OOH.

Yes, I used to have it as a teenager, it was called Ponstan Forte in those days but exactly the same. It was wonderful stuff, it held back the terrible bleeding and also eased my dreadful cramping pains. Definitely worth using although it's quite strong.

passthemustard · 26/09/2020 19:59

I had tranexamic acid for heavy bleeding when I first had my copper coil in. It's revolutionary.

I’m prescribed it to take during my period and it definitely reduces the flow. I also take mefenamic acid for pain relief at the same time which helps immensely.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 26/09/2020 21:28

Why was she prescribed the implant, was this also because of pain and heaviness of bleeding?.

I would really now try and determine the cause of this pain and heavy bleeding as well as treat the symptoms. I found this tablet to be effective only in the short term.

Endometriosis can cause both to arise and she needs a gynaecologist referral, you are wise to indeed push for this

I've had both tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid over the years. Both were helpful but neither were ideal for me. I got on better with mefananic acid. I'm blissfully through all that and joyfully embracing HRT now.

There have been a number of articles about going period-free recently. I really wish that had been suggested to me as a viable option as the years from aged 13 to 50 have been unnecessarily painful and difficult.
