The pill and blood clots

Hello 😊
I don’t know if this is the right place to post this but here goes..

Today I went for a smear test, besides from the uncomfortable few minuets the nurse decided she was going to do a general health check (not had one in over 10 years 😬) she asked my about what contraceptive I was on so I told her I’m on the POP. She then asked about family history and unfortunately my mum and her 2 sisters have all had blood clots with my mum having the most serious case. Nurse then went on to say I shouldn’t be on the pill and began with all these horror stories of what could happen to me... worst being I could have a brain hemorrhage 😢😢😅

She told me to keep taking my pill until I get can an appointment with my doctor but that isn’t for two weeks. I now over thinking every little pain or ache I get in my head. 🤣

Do I stop or am I overreacting?

Sorry for the long post I’m just very anxious 😦

I’m not a medical professional but I had a pulmonary embolism at 20 after being on the combined pill. It also turned out that I have clotting issues with my blood which together have me a thrombosis.

My understanding is that the Progesterone only pill is the better pill in that the risk of thrombosis is minimal versus the combined pill

I found this which might be helpful [https://www.medsafe.govt.nz/consumers/leaflets/oralcontraceptives.asp]

If you have family history of thrombosis it’s definitely worth checking with your GP, and if you are TTC as pregnancy also increases risk of thrombosis

Do you mean progesterone-only? I take that after having a clot whilst on the combined pill (which also contains oestrogen, and which has been demonstrated to increase the risk of clot). It was investigated and I found I was Factor V Leiden deficient.

In my country the recommendation is that women like me shouldn’t take the combined pill but can take progesterone-only formulations.

It’s worth remembering that for me the risk of blood clot is also increased by pregnancy (I had to take blood-thinning injections). Progesterone-only is a safer option than being pregnant.
