I've just received my biopsy results from colposcopy (I've been experiencing bleeding after sex and nurse said I had what looked like an ectropian which are the reasons I was referred)- Result-Cin 1.
Does anyone know if it's the Cin causing the bleeding or if it's due to the ectropian that was observed? I've simply been told I will need a smear in 1 year. Despite my as smear being due now? Do I still go for smear?
I understand I obviously have HPV.
My huge worry is that I must have had HPV for years as up until 3 months ago when I began having sex again (and bleeding), I hadn't had sex for 3 years.
I must have been HPV+ for at least 3 years?
Surely I need treatment as my body obviously hasn't got rid of this virus in 3+ yrs and cell changes are progressing?

I hope this makes sense. I'm rambling..
Anyone offer an insight?

Not an HCP, so can only answer a couple of your questions (and by doing so will bump this back into active where it might be seen by people who know more)

  • as you've had a colposcopy you don't need a smear now as well, so go in one year
  • there are oodles of different types of HPV, some clear from the body fairly quickly, others can lie dormant for years
  • there is no treatment for HPV
  • watchful wait is a standard approach for CIN-1 as so many resolve without treatment

I had CIN 3 20 years ago and had loop diathermy. I then had clear smears for 5 years, one slightly unsure one and back on yearly recalls for 5 more years all clear and moved to 3 years. Then I had the HPV smear test year last year and have HPV again - watch and wait as no changes.

HPV can go away on its own and it doesn’t always cause major changes, yearly check ups will keep an eye on you

Possible you developed it in the last 3 months not 3 years?

Thanks for your replies.
I think I should trust the professionals.
Its really difficult trying to get across that my partner and I hadn't had sex for three years yet I've got HPV which means I must have had it years...Confused

I've just had my last smear results back. HPV positive with no cell changes. I am certain I've had HOV for 16 of years as I had a few warts 16 years ago. I still feel pretty gross about it, but what can you do... I was always careful and they were in an area where no one had been so I'm pretty sure it wasn't from sexual activity. The GUM clinic dismissed this, but funnily enough my mum was in hospital for a gynae procedure. When she came round from the anaesthetic, the nurse asked about a wart on her hand and told her to get it treated so she didn't end up with warts "down there"! I must admit I am slightly nervous about my results, but I reassure myself with the fact that they've only fairly recently changed the screening procedure. Previously they only looked at cell changes. Now, they screen for HPV first and if you are positive, they go on to look for cell changes. So yes, you could have had it for years and you would never have known!
