I'm 49 and have peri menopause symptoms. I've been checked out and my Dr has agreed to prescribe HRT. She said it's normal for a woman who still has her womb to use progesterone too with oestrogen and has advised I have a Mirena coil fitted before starting oestrogen patches. I hadn't come across this before - anyone else? I've never had a coil before so a bit anxious about it...thanks!

The Mirena is not the only way to get progesterone. You can also take it as tablets. Unfortunately, it can cause PMT-like side effects, which is why you doctor is suggesting it is delivered directly to the uterus. Apparently the uterus thickens if it is exposed oestrogen without progesterone and this could pose a risk to health. Maybe try the tablets if you are not sure about Mirena.

I suffered life changing injuries during childbirth and told my GP hell would freeze over before they put any devices in me.

I didn’t want to have the coil so I take the mini pill for contraception and have oestrogel and Utrogestan for HRT. I take a Utrogestan every night and use 4 pumps of oestrogel. I find it suits me really well.
