Occasional brown blood

Started happening in May after going for a wee there would be a smidge of brown blood after wiping on toilet paper, also after opening the bowels there would be be dab of brown blood on paper and sometimes a bit more as I would see it running down toilet bowl.
Now this happened 4-5 times in May and then stopped, occurred again mid July on and off for about 3 weeks and probably happened about 7-8 times. So it's not continuous just occasionally.
I saw the doctor on Thursday and asked for a private smear which she didn't feel I needed as my last one three years ago was normal but I insisted as I'm 52 now and no periods since October 2016 and no spotting since August 2018 until now.
Also sent urine to the lab and that came back clear yesterday.
She has referred me back to gynae but I'm expecting a long wait! I actually had a hysterscopy in December because I had a thickened uterine lining but under GA they couldn't take a biopsy as they said I had atrophy? but the consultant said there was no cancer all looked fine and they also did a d& c at the time.
He said if there was any bleeding to see my doctor which I did and am now being referred back.
My doctor said she wasn't overly worried because I'd just had it checked out eight months ago but when I pressed her about what she thought she said something about maybe pressing against something. ?
Trying not to worry anyone else had this?

Sorry to hear that OP. Next time give it a sniff. Is it blood or could it be faeces?
