Fibroids - coil

lovelylovelove · 19/08/2020 23:23

I have recently had a scan which has revealed lots of small fibroids. Very very heavy periods, pain and bloating.
I'm 42 and have children.
Doctor says best option is to have a coil fitted.
Has anyone had any experience of the coil for fibroids and other treatment options?

I have, and in my case, mine was pushed out. It didn't make my periods lighter, I was bleeding more. I've just had a depo injection and have had my first non period (without worrying I might be pregnant) for YEARS!
I think it depends on where your fibroids are as to if they will affect the coils fitting. One of mine is quite large and goes into my womb. The others are within the womb wall, so not really affecting anything.

Yes I have one large fibroid. you could try tranexamic acid for heavy bleeding but I don't think it would work for pain. I had a mirena fitted twice.both times it came out as I was passing very big clots although
while had them in it was brilliant and made periods much lighter. I have just had a uterine fibroid embolisation which blocks the blood supply to the fibroid but 3 periods on it doesn't seem to have made much difference. whether that's an option for multiple fibroids I don't know.

I would try the mirena.

The Mirena coil changed my life. Fab:)

I did - had one large fibroid and a couple of smaller ones, plus some polyps. I had a mirena fitted with high hopes of it being a miracle solution but sadly it wasn't for me. I bled more days than I didn't and still had very heavy bleeding and flooding despite taking tranexamic acid as well. It also gave me cramps like i've never had before. I had it in for about a year and then it seemingly fell out during a particularly bad bleeding episode.....or at least that's when we assume it went as I couldn't find the strings after that and further investigations concluded it hadn't penetrated my womb and gone elsewhere! I then had uterine fibroid embolisation and about 6 months in it's made a huge difference for me. I still tend to have a day of heavy bleeding at the start of my period but less severe than before and the number of days i bleed for seems to be reducing.
There seems to be a "hierarchy" of things that they want you to try before considering surgical interventions - tranexamic acid being first, then the pill or mirena, then if none of those work they refer you go gynecology to explore further options.

Thanks replying everyone. There are so many mixed experiences I don't know what to do for the best. I've not heard good things about the coil in general but for others it is amazing.
I think have hysterectomy so then I have no more fibroids but then everyone says it's a big operation and once you are in menopause you put on weight.
I feel bloated as it due to the fibroids.

Unless you pay to go privately I think they will be very reluctant to give you a hysterectomy on the NHS until you have tried all other options. Even then, they will very much try to persuade you down non-surgical routes first. It took me over a year and being back & forth to my GP after i had the coil put in before they even referred me to gynae because they have to try all the options available to them (coil, pill, Tranexamic acid) first.

I've recently had the cool fitted after weeks and weeks of continuous bleeding and severe flooding with clots. It would only stop with northisterone and started again within 24 hours if stopping.

No idea if fibroid or not because hard to get a scan (referral has been sent)

But despite daily spitting on coil and occasional discomfort in lower abdomen so far it's been a success.

Even my period was medium flow and lasted only 5 days.

I would say give it a try but be prepared for the fact you can spot bleed for 6-12 months but you can also eventually stop having periods.

And if it doesn't work you are one step further up the ladder of things they'll insist trying.

I would enquire about the possibility of having a myomectomy op as this is a treatment for fibroids. It may not be necessary therefore to undergo a hysterectomy. In any event you need a referral to a gynaecologist as this is well outside a GPs remit.
