Hysteroscopy anyone?

I'm expecting to be referred for this procedure once I have been seen by the gynaecologist. i'm petrified of medical stuff and have needle phobia too. I've heard some nightmare stories from people who have had them and even the NHS website says no anaesthesia and can be painful.
If you have had one how bad was your experience?

I had one after I was sterrilised to check clips anyway it was alright not particularly pleasant it's like a smear and period pain combined I took psinkillers and kalms before I went .

I can't remember needles being involved I think you can ask for a local anesthetic but I only found out after.

I had a general for mine and my LLETZ treatments. But I always insist on generals and sensations for procedures. I want them to get on with it properly.

There does seem to be the attitude of women being expected to suck it up and put up with pain.

I had one last week and I know we're all different but I didn't think it was that bad. It was a bit uncomfortable but nowhere near agony.

Sounds similar to having a coil inserted then, from what is being said. i did manage to endure that, though less frightening at GPs than in the local hospital, which doesn't have the best of reputations.

Not too bad but take paracetamol before. They asked me if I wanted to look at the screen and that’s when I felt sick so maybe dont do that!

I had one last year, and I'm afraid I found it REALLY painful (and I'm no wimp). 0-60mph full labour pains.

No needles involved, but, to be honest, if I needed another (which I won't because I don't have a uterus anymore) I would have gone for GA.

If you are nervous/tense, I can imagine it would hurt more. That said, it's interesting how many people weren't bothered by it.

The worst bit (not really very bad) was afterwards at home as they put a few puffs of gas inside you to inflate things so they can see what they are doing iyswim, and for some reason it makes your shoulders hurt afterwards. But for all that, a couple of nurofen and a heating pack took care of it

I had one at 18 before I’d had children, done under local and it was excruciating, sorry. Had rod that he was poking my cervix with and he couldn’t get my cervix to open, after 3 attempts and almost being on the ceiling he gave it ne last attempt and it worked.

Back on the ward of day admissions, I found out that every single women on the ward had it done under general(they were all a lot older than me) I was extremely annoyed when I asked why I only had local I was told I was young and more able to deal with it! If anything I was at an immediate disadvantage as I’d never been through childbirth at that point so my cervix had not been open before.

If I had to have another I would insist on a general, it really was not a pleasant experience and I’m not too bad with pain(5 kids, no pain relief)

I had one with removal of polyps. A bit uncomfortable for a few seconds having the local anaesthetic but easily tolerated. Gynaecologist chatted away (all part of keeping the patient relaxed apparently). Things didn’t look so good so he calmly explained why he was concerned. Nurses were lovely, lots of tlc , tea and biscuits afterwards. Results fast tracked and then hysterectomy, all good now. For every negative story there will be hundreds of uneventful ones like mine. Good luck

An update. After enduring a very uncomfortable ultrasound examination which left me with cystitis for 3 days I went to see the gynaecologist full of trepidation. The lining of my uterus was thin but not quite thin enough to meet the requirements of NICE to be left in peace. I was braced for discussion about how I really didn't want a hysteroscopy but he explained he could just get a small sample then and there and was so understanding I agreed. There was a little discomfort but no real pain, and he found a little polyp on my cervix which he thought might be the cause of the problem, so snipped that off. I'm awaiting a final letter to say for certain I'm in the clear but feel much better now. I wish someone had been able to tell me that there was something a bit less unpleasant than a hysteroscopy that might be suggested - surely my GP should have known?
Anyway, although I was scared silly by the 14 day referral I have been very fortunate to get a minor gynaecological problem sorted out so quickly.
