Mirena for heavy periods - experiences?

Hi,

Had an online dr appointment today about ongoing issues with heavy periods. They've suggested a Mirena coil. Did anybody get one for this reason? Did it work? I've had enough, cysts have been removed, tranexamic acid doesn't do much, I can't go to work, can't have a social life, can't sleep. I'm hoping this will work for me. Although they aren't fitting them at the moment, so could be a long wait...

I was exactly where you are about 5 years ago. Put it off for 2 years after reading about bad experiences but eventually got it. I had light bleeding on and off for 9 months (maybe about 40% of the time for the first 4 months but v v light) and now I have light spotting maybe every 6 or 8 weeks. It is transformative! I'll go straight for another when this one is up.

Had it for contraception and to help with pmt (very low moods)
I've had them for 8 years now. Not a period in sight and the pmt is much better. Wish I'd had one years ago.

Had mine for five years, had horrific periods before that. Love it love it love it. Looking to ttc and dreading having it taken out.

Had a bit of on and off periods for a few months and since then nothing but occasional spotting

I also put it off but after 2 years of patient ly trying alternatives which didn't work I got it done. 6 months of light but erratic spotting and its calmed right down. I get 4 days of very light bleed now as opposed to filling a mooncup in 2 hours, clotting cramps and flooding.

I'd say go for it.

Hmmmm, bit of a mixed bag. Thanks for all your opinions. Definitely things to think about. I wouldn't be happy with putting on weight, that's for sure. That never happened when I was on the pill, so I'm hoping that weight gain isn't a reaction for me to hormones.

If I had to choose right now, I prefer the idea of an ablation, but I don't know if they'll do that. I'm 41, have absolutely no plans for any more babies. The GP who is an expert in these matters is currently on leave, I've been advised to do some reading and speak to her in a few weeks. But apparently the Mirena will be their preferred option.

It was completely life changing for me. My periods went haywire and heavy in my 40s. I finally got the Mirena, which stopped my periods completely and saw me through the menopause. It was brilliant for me.

I never had particularly heavy periods and more a pretty much took them away. Loved it. I need to get another one now, have had my LO and too old for another! How come they aren't fitting them at the mo, because of covid??

*mirena pretty much took them away

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/07/2020 20:53

It didn’t work for me.

Having it put in and taken out was grim.

I’m back on the pill constantly now so no periods 😀

Yes, none of those type of appointments happening at my GP at the moment. They're hoping to start them in a few weeks.

I had one fitted last April due to polyps and very heavy periods. After initial bleeding it reduced gradually to the past few months when I haven't bled at all. However I have struggled with anxiety and weight gain plus incredibly sore breasts. I am considering asking for removal.
For some it's brilliant. So not much help! Xx

Hi I know this is an old post @Danniotley but when you say it took around 12 months to settle were you just bleeding randomly for those 12 months? I’m spotting every two weeks, and the spotting lasts weeks at a time. Get two weeks of no bleeding then it starts again. The cramps are horrible too. It’s been nearly 9 months.
I have a gynae appointment but it will have been in for almost 12 months by the time im seen! Xx
