Polyp removal

I'm having a polyp removed from my cervix tomorrow. And I'm so worried. Is it painful? How long does it take? Trying to keep busy but can't really think about anything else!

Have a general anaesthetic
Ask for pain killers to take home after
Might have painful cramps
Dont do what I did and go out during the following day

mrsawhite · 08/06/2020 14:59

No option for that. Not had one of those either before. I'm being seen in outpatients

I had two removed with no anaesthetic as it wasn’t offered. I was absolutely dreading it as I have a very low pain threshold and heal very slowly. I didn’t feel any pain just period type cramps as they were doing things but not all the time. I just made a conscious effort to breathe slowly and evenly and relax and not tense up and it was very bearable. The woman at the business end just told me to stop her if I needed a break but I didn’t have to do that. I was fine afterwards as well and back to normal the next day and as far as I can remember didn’t have any bleeding.

mrsawhite · 08/06/2020 15:18

Ok that's good to know. Did they do a scan also?

I had one removed last year while at the colposcopy clinic and without wanting to scare you, it was honestly awful! I won't give the full awfulness but it was not as they'd said and I had a few complications.
To be fair I always get the worst case scenario's I don't have much luck haha.
I've actually not long been for a smear and the 1st thing I asked the Nurse ''please tell me the polyp hasn't returned'' she couldn't see any so phew!

AuntieBiotic · 08/06/2020 15:49

mrsawhite I can’t remember if I had a scan or not. I had post meno bleeding and the GP referred me under the two week guidelines. They said at the start they would have a good look around with the camera and if they found anything they could easily remove they would do it at the same time. I think one was quite a large polyp. They were sent off for biopsy but the doctor said they were usually benign. Which is proved to be. I was braced for agony but for me routine smears are more painful. My cervix is tilted backwards and veers off to one side a bit apparently. I hope your experience is as unbothersome as mine was. I just tried to go with it and let it wash over me and to relax as much as possible because I think if you are tense things are more uncomfortable.

Fuckityfucksake · 08/06/2020 15:50

Sorry should have added no it doesn't take long. It's similar to having a smear really, you may well be sitting upright in the chair with stirrup rests for your legs and they use the speculum for access to it.

blue25 · 08/06/2020 15:53

I had a GA. mine was pretty grim as I got a nasty infection afterwards. Definitely rest up for a while after it’s done.

mrsawhite · 08/06/2020 16:57

@Fuckityfucksake oh gawd that sounds terrible. Google seems to say it isn't painful. Hope to god it isn't. I am dreading it

I hope it’s much easier then you are expecting it to be. Good luck. I was surprised it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be and hope you have a similar experience.

GertiMJN · 08/06/2020 22:19

I had one removed last year. It was honestly no big deal at all. No anaesthetic and over in seconds. Hopefully yours will be the same. Flowers

mrsawhite · 08/06/2020 22:21

Thank you. Ive just got it in my mind will get scanned and fine something else god awful.

I had an appt last year for removal.
Was worried sick
However when I went it had fallen off of its own accord
I had a smear which was when it was discovered
The Dr reckoned the smear had dislodged it.
Was told it was literally a tug and practically painless as cervix few nerve cells.
She also told me if she couldn't remove it quickly in one attempt she would book me on to theatre list to be anaesthetised for procedure.
Good luck ... 5 minutes at most .

Holothane · 08/06/2020 22:43

Ga for mine last year and look around womb as well, smear as well.

AuntieBiotic · 09/06/2020 11:51

Good luck today mrswhite I’ve remembered that I didn’t have a scan because the procedure itself meant they could have a good look around for anything untoward. I was referred by GP and then got the appt for the hysteroscopy.

mrsawhite · 09/06/2020 12:33

Ah ok. Appointment is shortly. So nervous!

AuntieBiotic · 09/06/2020 18:03

Hope it’s all done now OP and you’re ok.

mrsawhite · 09/06/2020 19:27

So much better than I thought. Consultant was just marvellous. I got myself so worked up. Scanned ovaries and womb. All good. I didn't even notice her take the polyp out. Now enjoying a glass of wine. Thanks all for the advice!

Powerplant · 09/06/2020 19:40

So glad it’s all done and wasn’t as bad as you thought. Have another glass of wine 💐

GertiMJN · 09/06/2020 20:06

Glad to hear it!

AuntieBiotic · 09/06/2020 21:29

Ah that’s brilliant. I hope you sleep well now that’s all behind you and am so glad it wasn’t as bad as you thought it was going to be.

Fuckityfucksake · 11/06/2020 13:41

I'm glad it all went well Mrs That's how it should go :)

@Fuckityfucksake oh gawd that sounds terrible.
I can tell you now yours has been done.
It was bloody awful. Mine was picked up during a smear in the april and was, according to the nurse, fine and causing no harm so safe to just leave.
Forward to June when I had to attend colposcopy clinic for an appt relating to abnormal results - I told the Dr about said polyp and she was like yeah that's fine we don't really tend to mess with them so we'll leave it.
Until she saw it and decided it was coming off as it had grown quite large and she wanted it testing. She explained what she'd do, it wouldn't hurt and would just twist off with a little tug.
Only it was awful. It didn't want to nicely twist off and I ended up with a torn cervix as it was so deeply rooted. I'd also had cervical biopsies done that day so you can imagine it was uncomfortable to say the least.
My husband was sat at the side of me during this and could see the screen, bleurgh, at one point I had to not look at him as he was turning more and more white :)
Anyway I had the next day off work so I rested and stayed off my feet as much as possible but felt I was fine to return to work the next day.
I was achey and crampy so took painkillers but later into my shift, while I was alone the pain got worse. When I went and looked the silver stuff they used to seal my cervix had came away and I was haemorrhaging I had to go back to the hospital to have it looked at and dealt with and needed a few more days off. The pain was bloody awful.
Funnily enough yesterday I had another appt in Colposcopy clinic and I had built up my anxiety to a crazy level before going. Even though I knew I had no polyps to deal with this time, the fear took over me, irrationally so.
I was fine once in the chair and getting on with it. It was the same Dr as last year and after reading my notes from last year commented ' I'm sure you'll remember our appointment last year when I battled with the stubborn polyp' She then went on to tell the nurse present what had happened :)
So that kind of proved to me most peoples polyp removal experiences are positive and any I may need removing in the future would also be, hopefully.

okiedokieme · 11/06/2020 17:25

Was about to post and say it doesn't hurt more than a scratch but I'm too late! I have them removed once or twice a year, very prone, worst bit is waiting for histology!
