GP not clear on PCOS or PCO

Hi there,

After a long 6 months I have finally been diagnosed. Unfortunately the GP didn’t actually make it clear whether it was just polycystic ovaries or PCOS. The symptoms I suffer with is irregular periods (35-40 day cycles) and weight gain. I don’t know if this is both coincidental though. I don’t have any other symptoms such as acne, oily skin, balding. But anyway I had to have 2 blood tests. Can’t remember the proper name but one was to look to see if I was ovulating and it was fine and the other blood test I had to do was hormones and that one was fine too. Only thing was my progesterone was slightly high. I had to have an ultra sound few weeks ago and the GP told me over the phone yesterday that the cervix and right over looks perfectly normal then the left ovary has a mild case of polycystic ovaries. After that she said to just keep an eye on periods and that was it really, and If it gets too much just go back to the doctors and get medication. Just a bit frustrating she didn’t actually confirm which one it is. I’ve been hunting all over the internet and it isn’t really clear. 3 years ago I fell pregnant and ended up sadly having a miscarriage at 16 weeks. It took me about 6 months to actually get pregnant. Since then I haven’t tried conceiving again as It’s not the best time. So I guess 6 months is too normal for PCOS, especially without any help right? I don’t really want to be calling the doctors and being a pain to ask for a full conclusion on my health. But overall, good hormones, overweight (but unsure if it’s health related), no mild symptoms, messy periods, polycystic ovary, 6 months falling pregnant. Sorry if this question is strange but what do you guys think it is looking at this? Thank you

Doesn't sound like pcos to me. When all this covid madness us over and your gp has more time, book in for a follow up appointment.

If this is PCOS (and I would be amazed), it is incredibly mild. My 'irregular cycles' were between 14-167 days to give some context! Blush

What part of your cycle did you have your hormone test done? Second half - then it's alright to have slightly high progesterone.
Pcos is mainly estrogen dominant condition so your estrogen should be higher. In any case you can have perfectly normal cycles and still have pcos but you might have other symptoms like heavy periods or facial hair.
You do need a proper treatment and thyroid check if you have trouble getting pregnant. If you certainly have pcos then your doctor might prescribe Metformin and birth control pills to make your period normal and for reducing weight . You need to take birth control pills for 6 months.
If you have minor pcos abstain sugar. Don't have any juice or anything with sugar for a while . Pcos cause insulin resistance which causes havoc with your hormonal cycles and also cause weight gain ( specially fat). If you just have minor case of pcos it will be mostly resolved by omitting sugar from your diet.
I do hope your GP has done a thyroid test because it might look pcos but thyroid can cause similar issues as well.

Hi thanks for the replies. I can’t really remember any dates as it was few months ago sorryBlush. When she gave me the blood test results over the phone she told me everything looked fine and I believe thyroids was getting checked as well. Not quite sure though. But I’ve decided I will aim to book an appointment with the GP in the new few weeks and try to find out what exactly is the the confirmation
