Partial hysterectomy

Hello,
I am experiencing ridiculously heavy periods and have tried transamic acid which does help but it's still really bad (moon cup full in ten minutes over and over)
I dont want anything hormonal I have tried the merina and the pill and all have bad side effects. I am seeing my GP tomorow and assume I will be sent for ultrasound. I've been to the docs wit this many times over the years.
I'm 47 now and wondering if they offer me a partial hysterectomy it might be a good idea.
I thought I'd come here and see if I can get anyone elses experiences.
Thanks

Has anyone ever investigated the cause of your bleeding? If it’s due to something like fibroids then there are other treatment options before hysterectomy. An ultrasound will probably be your next step and if they don’t refer you for one I would request it.

I had a hysterctomy last year due to a massive fibroid causing extreme anaemia. My very straight talking consultant was of the the view that as I was done having kids, why not just get it out and I agreed with her. Its been life changing. I have no regrets at all.

I will say the same as Ohdeariedear.
Had awful bleeding due to a huge fibroid - tried the meds to shrink it, which I finished the day I received the letter to say stop taking them they may cause liver damage!!! They haven't thankfully but they never made the fibroid shrink one little bit! Saw a fabulous consultant who said 'hysterectomy?'

Yes please. Waited a few months as non urgent, but been done a year and feel so much better.

Yep me too. Tried rhe shrinking tablets, they didn't work now 5 years post op and feeling great.

I had a partial hysterectomy in my early 40’s due to big fibroids and it was life changing. Good luck.

I was offered a hysterectomy last year (also offered ablation but that was an instant no - having researched it extensively prior). I’ve had ultrasound scans which show minor fibroids but it’s mostly just age and the consequences of two fairly horrific c-sections & my genes.

I would go for it but can’t see a way to have six weeks off work and not drive without losing my job & my kids not being able to go to school. I take a combination of tranexamic acid, naproxen and co-codomol, there are two days every 24 where I can’t really leave the house (will flood through super plus tampax and maximum absorbency pads every 20 mins without the drugs, with them it’s more like an hour on day two). Also don’t really get to sleep as I have to get up to change everything constantly & sleep on maternity sheets etc. With that and the pain it’s not ideal, if it shows no signs of improvement (currently a regular 24 day cycle - bleed for 10 days & have two weeks clear) and I’m 48 this year. Also it feels like any weekend away/holiday/swimming opportunity is always in the 10 day bit, I’m so over it!!

No answer there I’m afraid, if you are in a position to do so then go for it I’d say. My Mum ended up with a hysterectomy at 58 for similar reasons and the thought of putting up with this and having my life ruled by it for another 10 years only to have one anyway is horrible!

Thé best thing I ever did. Got my life back. The only regret is not doing it years ago!

Ohdeariedear · 13/03/2020 16:46

Waves to all my fellow former fibroid owners. Such a life changing thing to get rid of!

Thank you for all your replies. Can asked if you experienced and hormonal changes? Reduced sex drive? Mood changes? Fatigue?
Thanks x

BitOfFun · 15/03/2020 20:02

I haven't had one, but I can't imagine the fatigue would be worse that all that blood loss, you poor thing!

Honestly - I feel like superwoman now. Full of energy and everything else good. But I was literally on my knees beforehand without even realising it - I knew I was knackered but just thought it was perimenopause symptoms.
