Anyone else with fibroids?

Early last year after signifcant stabbing pains down there I was diagnosed with 3 fibroids in my uterus wall (one is 3cm) the others are smaller.

Anyone else have them too?

I am just wondering how this could affect me having children down the line (I am 36yrs old)

Also does anyone get them hurting once in a blue moon? For example every so often month I goet that stabbing pain when I would go to the toilet again. Then it goes away for a few months.

I ask my doctor at a recent appointment if they will do a check to make sure they aren't getting worse and she said no. I wasn't expecting regular scans but maybe at least once a year? or even every 2 years?

I just want to hear from other people I guess about their experiences of having them, is there a way to reduce them other than surgery- thinking diet here. I have googled but I would prefer hearing from people

Fibroids are normal, as in a large proportion of women in their 30s will have them, but few know about it. Between a third and half of women in their 30s will have them. When I had last baby in my late 30s they found a few on the scan. The sonographer said that white women are more prone than others. They're highly unlikely to cause any problems with pregnancy unless you are very unlucky & have a big one very low down blocking the baby's exit through your cervix. That's rare. The sort you have, intramural, are the best ones to have as they're least likely to cause any problems.

NHS website is pretty good on this : www.nhs.uk/conditions/fibroids/

You'll be fine Grin

I have fibroids and sometimes they can be quite painful. The contraceptive implant worked well for me as it's stops periods. Fibroids feed off blood. They shouldn't stop you conceiving. If you are getting a lot of pain ask to be referred to a gynaecologist.

I have them. The found them during c section operation. One was in an area that make have had an impact on getting pregnant but I haven't really had too much bleeding or trouble. I might go for a private check up though to make sure everything is ok.

Thanks, yes the large oe is at the tp so they believe that is why I als oget back pain the other two on a wall.

They did mention the coil and they did refer me to gyno cos they didn't think they could fit a coil but I decided not to go ahead and just say on my cerzavette pill. My sister had a coil fitted and she had a bad time with it and it has put me off and taking a pill is more preferrable.

Its good to know it won't affect having a child, thanks for letting me know :)

Fibroids are more common in black women than white but the reasons for that are known. I had large ones and had to have a hysterectomy.

If you're experiencing pain I would actually see a different GP and ask about the options available to you. I was fobbed off by a couple of doctors before finally seeing one of the top consultants in the country. He was amazing.

hmmm I did manage to the doctor to put me in for a scan which is when they were discovered last year. Since them pain is sporadic and really random just odd pain once in a blue moon which is why I asked the doctor I saw recently whether they did a yeary or 2 yearly scan to check they were not getting bigger.

Perhaps I might now get them checked privately myself once a year mostly the big one at 3cm to make sure its not growing more. I could opt into private medical cover at work but will have to check what gets covered.

The options given were control it with pill or coil, surgery option wasn't on the table because they were not big enough.

I don't mind having them, I probably had them for years and never knew until I experienced pain.

You don't get monitoring scans normally because fibroids are normal, as in a third of women in their thirties will have them & there is no need to monitor. You would be referred for extra scans probably if the pain level increased.

Surgery for fibroids does increase some risks in pregnancy and birth, so you wouldn't want that unless things were dire.

I had an IUD for contraception. One day I had really bad cramps and then the threads disappeared. I think the iud got kind of pulled up on a fibroid. A scan confirmed it was still in situ.

Yes I have multiple fibroids, all small. I suffer very heavy periods (resulting in iron deficiency and sometimes anemia) which are horrible to live with. The fibroids are the top suspect at the moment. I'd gladly have a hysterectomy to be rid of the effects. Awaiting a gynae consultation at the moment to see what they're willing to do for me.

emmathedilemma · 04/03/2020 08:41

Yes! I tick none of the high risk factor boxes for them, just started getting longer heavier periods which become practically unmanageable. I’ve got one that’s 6cm and some smaller ones. I’ve tried mirena (made me bleed even more!), the pill, tranexamic acid and finally got referred to gynae so planning a uterine artery embolisation to shrink them.....and hopefully that will work!
I get really odd stabbing pains and seem to need the toilet more urgently than I used to do suspect it’s also pressing on my bladder. Apparently my uterus is “14 weeks” so hoping I might lose a bit of weight too if they shrink ;)

emmathedilemma · 04/03/2020 08:44

I should add that my private medical cover through work has been a godsend for this!! Waited about 3 months for an NHS referral to come through, they had a 26 week wait for a hysteroscopy which they’d want to do for investigation before proposing any treatment. I’ve got all that done, including an MRI and UAE booked in 3 months going private. I also found the NHS were very much pushing another drug (Esmya??) before proposing surgical options which I was absolutely not doing after the mess the mirena and pill left me in! When I told my private consultant this he just laughed so I feel there’s a story behind that one!

I have 4 small ones, largest also 3cm. We are TTC and I had a hycosy where they put dye into the uterus and they get an ultrasound of the exact shape of the uterus, including the fibroids. My fibroids aren't blocking anything, and they didn't think were impacting infertility. I never knew I had them till my 1st pregnancy when they showed up on the ultrasound.

I have regular periods, which aren't heavy. I've had 2 episodes of extreme, central pelvic pain which lasted about 20mins both times on the last day of my period. So bad that I vomited and almost collapsed in pain. No idea what the cause was, or even if it was related to fibroids or not.
