Thrush/water infection every time we have sex?

I'm just sick of this.

First off I get a very low level of thrush symptoms before my period.

I've read the change in hormones that triggers one's period to begin can mess with your PH level and cause thrush.

So a few days before my monthlies I get itchy.

It's GENERALLY not so bad I need treatment. Sometimes I'll use a little 1% climotrozole(sp?).

My partner and I are in a bit of a slump so we don't have sex that often. But when we do I end up so itchy and sore. I end up needing to pee all the time with only a bit coming out.

Definitely NOT STD related as we got checked to rule that out. Both clear.

It's driving me insane.

To complicate things even more DP is allergic to thrush treatment. He has a huge reaction to the creams.

I've just sent him to the chemist to get pessery and cream for me.

Is there anything I can do.

I feel like we should just use condoms, but I'm too old for that shit and he's had the snip, seems like a relaly backwards step in my life. Was glad to be done with them.

Sorry to sound gross, but does he ejaculate in you if you’re not using condoms? Could be that you’re taking a reaction to that or to his body wash?

If that’s not the problem, pee and wash yourself with warm water down there after sex. If that doesn’t help I’d consider seeing the doctor

BogOffJanuary · 22/02/2020 15:22

Also, you shouldn’t be having sex with thrush or while treating yourself for it, even the NHS website advises that. (Based on your comment of your partner taking a reaction to the cream I’m assuming you do.)

OhLawdee · 22/02/2020 15:22

Yes he does ejaculate inside me.

I'm wondering if I may have an allergy because this has been going in nearly 20 years in some form or another after sex.

Could be bodywash. It's so frustrating not knowing for sure.

Some times it does down then flares up again.

No we never have sex while symptoms are present.

We often have sex then we both get thrush a few days later and argue over who gave it who as we both had no symptoms prior. Hmm

Do both you and your partner use the thrush treatment at the same time? Otherwise you are re-infecting each other. Men don’t often have any symptoms of thrush, but can be harbouring the fungal infection.
Also in peri/post menopausal women the lack of oestrogen can make the skin more fragile and more susceptible to infection. A course of oestrogen cream may help. Ideally see your GP/PN or GUM clinic.

Always:
Pee straight after sex
Shower straight after
Drink a large glass of water before or straight after - to flush out your system.

I have exactly this. Get a gynae referral from your GP. I was put on an initial dose of oral fluconazole every day for a week or two (I can’t remember exactly how much/how long TBH, but it was to basically clear out any deep-tissue thrush) and then I was on a once a week dose for six months which kept it at bay. Mine got to the point where over the counter stuff didn’t touch it - I was having to go to the GP for a course of oral fluconazole to clear the thrush I got EVERY time I had sex (no, my husband was not re-infecting me - I’m just badly made!)

In addition, there’s also the usual advice - no soap in/around your vulva, cotton undies, rinse your hair after shampooing such that the run off doesn’t get between your legs. I have to say though, using soap never made a difference as to whether I got thrush or not, but I do seem to avoid the UTI if I have a wee then wash WITH soap immediately after sex, then immediately apply a good coating of canesten inside and out.

I'm 35 so don't think it's menopausal.

I will visit the gp

I had this with a sexual partner once. I was told there was the possibility I was allergic to his penis Shock

surlecoup · 22/02/2020 16:05

I feel your pain. Research d-mannose. It’s a form of sugar that the body doesn’t absorb that the bacteria appears to ‘stick’ to. I take it after sex/morning after and it really seems to cut down the infections. Find the powder version which you take in water if you decide to try it as the tablets are gross.
If I do get an infection (as I’ve forgotten to take the d-mannose) I just take more of it and mostly avoid needing antibiotics.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2020 16:13

One cause of UTIs is cross contamination of fecal matter from the anus into the vagina. If you're getting very "wet" down there it's possible that the bacteria could be "swimming around" and come into contact with the vagina that way. Also any contact of his to the anus - fingers or penis - transferred to the vagina without wiping first, will likely cause a UTI.

Just in case this rings any bells.

OhLawdee · 22/02/2020 16:16

We do zero anal stuff so it wouldn't be any obvious contact.

I think I need to sit and read up then rehaul everything over this. Really getting me down.

I get them within hours if i dont pee straight away after sex, took me a while to work it out🙈

SleepDeprivedElf · 22/02/2020 16:25

Do you use lubricant? I started to and it's helped massively.

MrsJustDo · 22/02/2020 16:27

I had this problem. Was constantly getting thrush after my period, would treat it, have sex and before I knew it it would be back, would treat again then period would come and would start all over. Was constantly buying over the counter treatments!

I'm convinced my implant had a role in it (doctor disagreed) and just recently had it removed. Had also been told that tampons could be causing it so ditched those and switched to a mooncup (life changing). I also got a treatment for both my partner and I and took it at the same time. I then followed up with balance activ gel (doctor recommendation to try and rebalance pH levels). Don't know which of it worked as all kind of happened at the same time but now clear of any issues for a whole month! Couldn't feel happier.

If your partner can't use the cream he can get a pill. Pharmacist said cream was likely more effective but pill should also work. I think it can take about 7 days so need to hold off on having sex til that's passed.

Feel your pain though. Made me absolutely miserable and was spending a fortune treating it monthly (sometimes twice). Good luck.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 22/02/2020 16:30

Is it definitely thrush, have you had a look at your vulva? Lichen Schlerosus can cause all of these symptoms.

OhLawdee · 22/02/2020 17:21

There's no white or discharge. Just itching and burning pee.

I don't use lubricant as I don't need it.
