PCOS and ultrasound

Hi everyone,

Been through the wringer a bit over the last few months with health issues. Previously, I've been an awful doctor-avoider, which is probably why it's all caught up with me now.

I haven't had a regular cycle for around 10 years, and my last period was over a year ago. The one before that was over a year apart too. I am around 8 stone overweight with the classic apple shape, ridiculously hairy on my body and was losing lots of hair around my parting on my head. It's highly likely that I have PCOS, and Cushing's has been ruled out through investigations into my other health issues.

I've been referred back to hospital now to have an ultrasound on my ovaries and uterus, and I'm very nervous. Have any of you lovely ladies been through it? What should I expect? How can I prepare?

Thank you xxx

Ultrasound itself is neither scary nor hurtful. I am assuming you are suppose to get an internal vaginal ultrasound as well. That is also not hurtful, though it could be embarrassing/ awkward if you are getting it done for the first time. The sonographer will bring you too ease so don't worry too much about it.
As for pcos, it is a pretty manageble condition if caught early. Even now not all is lost. If it is confirmed that you have pcos the doctor will offer your birth control and Metformin. Metformin can help to reduce pcos induced weight but you might not like it in the beginning. All in all I would say keep visiting your GP as per the treatment plan and a lot of problems will be controlled. Don't know if you have kids or if you want kids in future but pcos affects fertility so you really want to treat it.
