Toxoplasmosis and eating out

Hi all,

I hope some of you can shed some lights over the whole toxoplasmosis thing. I am being really careful with washing all my veggies and fruits at home and mainly bringing with me cooked food at work, however one or twice a week I can't have prepared lunches and I have to eat out.

I always try not to get anything that could cause problems, however at the bar of the office the only thing they serve is avocado spread on toast. I did think that it was ok to eat, since the avo has its skin so shouldn't really be too risky in terms of toxoplasmosis but I have then been talking with a friend and she did say it could pass through the skin via the knife when cutting it so I should avoid eating it out, when I am not sure they have washed it before cutting it.

Now I got really stressed over this as I have it quite a few times since pregnant!

Does anyone know the likelihood of getting toxo at all or passing it to the baby? Or how likely it is to pass via the knife? I will avoid it from now and will talk to the midwife at my next appt but just was wondering if anyone can help put my mind at rest a bit...

Thanks!

I have never ever heard on anyone getting it from an avocado. I think you should speak to your MW about your health anxiety

There’s some information about toxoplasmosis and how often it occurs here: www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/pregnancy-complications/infections-pregnancy/toxoplasmosis-pregnancy

In general I would follow the official NHS guidelines about what to eat and what to avoid, and beyond that try not to worry too much. Avocado on toast prepared in a restaurant will be fine!

If you find yourself really preoccupied about stuff like this then I agree that talking to your midwife about the level of anxiety you’re having is a good move.

Pretty sure avocado is not on the risk list. A word of warning though. cat poo and also calf and lamb after birth is extremely dangerous for pregnant women

I had 11 indoors cats when I was pregnant and cleaned their litter trays out as normal. Son is fine, so am I. As pp have said, you need to speak to your HV/MW about your anxiety over this, and stop talking to idiots like your friend about it

Thank you all for your comments. I will surely speak with the MW next week as I know I have lots of anxiety about the whole food hygiene thing. Thanks
