Do you mean HPV?

It's not ideal, but many many women would test positive. It's not a certainty that you would develop cervical cancer as a result, it's just that the women who do go on to develop cervical cancer tend to be positive for HPV.

ALL it means is that you need to go for frequent smears.

This is a new protocol. My generation (40+) weren't even screened for HPV. The fact that you're now on their radar and stll have frequent screening is a Very Good Thing.

It is very very common. I also have hpv. In fact the gynaecologist told me that at my age (I was too late for the vaccine unfortunately) most people will actually have hpv, even if not everyone develops symptoms. Some are simply carriers. I was the same as you at first, absolutely mortified, but after it being explained and me researching more myself I feel a lot more reassured.

I have to go for regular screenings for now, back in another 6 months, but they dont anticipate anything coming of it, hopefully things will resolve themselves, as I'm sure they will for you too.

They told me it's very rare for it to actually develop into anything further.

I'd say try not to worry too much but I was right there where you are so I know how it is!

Hey,
For reassurance I had hpv positive and abnormal cell changes in my smear and after cell treatment I had a smear 6 months later and was hpv clear and no more cell changes. It's something that your body can fight off. If you smoke or have a low immune system it's more likely that your next smear would be hpv positive as your body cannot fight it as much.

Don't worry Smile. HPV is really common - most people get it at some point, and don't even realise. It can linger for years but the body usually gets rid of the virus naturally. In most cases, it doesn't cause any problems.

Even if you are unfortunate enough to develop abnormalities as a result of this infection, cervical cancer is slow to develop (it usually takes years for any changes to become cancerous) so regular monitoring generally picks it up at an early stage.

The majority of women your age will have HPV. In actual reality, nothing had changed for you.

For much younger women who haven't got HPV, the vaccine is amazing, and will significantly reduce their likelihood of developing cervical cancer. Your chance of developing it is the same as it always was.

Sorry, not being harsh, but there's no point worrying about this. Just get frequent screenings.

It's really not a big deal
