I had a copper iud fitted on new years eve. Started period on tuesday and it has been surprisingly light. Until today.. Sorry for tmi. But I'm soaking through within an hour. Passing clots as big. If not bigger than a £2 coin. When I go to the toilet I can feel more blood and clots just falling out. I've been cramping and keep going dizzy.
I had to leave work to change as completely soaked through my clothes.

I'm not sure if this is normal. I knew the first couple of periods would be rough but I don't remember it being this bad last time I had the iud fitted.

You need to go to A&E as this can be dangerous, it’s not normal, at least call 111!

I would seek medical advise immediately to make sure nothing serious is going on. Don't gamble with your health. I hope you're better soon! Flowers

What could it be!?

It's not normal seek medical advice

BrotherlyLove · 17/01/2020 15:54

Are you anywhere near menopausal age?
My period is like this every month Confused but I don't have an iud.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/01/2020 15:59

I thought that's what happened with an IUD,that is makes you have horrendously heavy periods?

If you are soaking a pad within an hour you need to seek medical advice as it can be a sign of something more serious like an infection/sepsis.

TheGoodNamesWereAlreadyTaken · 17/01/2020 16:03

No I'm only 32. Periods have been irregular the last few years though and pretty light and only lasting 4 days. This is hurrendous.

the copper coil can make periods heavier BUT it could also have become dislodged, especially as it's only recently been fitted so I would go to A&E. I had a similar episode (I have a mirena) and ran NHS24 as it was early hours of the morning and they sent me to A&E to get checked over (although I'm not sure they did a very thorough job!). I do have fibroids and heavy bleeding as "normal" though but had never had anything like that before and it sounds just like you describe, i ended up sitting on the loo with clots just flowing out of me. It was disgusting.

BrotherlyLove · 17/01/2020 16:40

You should probably book in with your GP then and I should probably follow my own advice too.
Obviously if it gets worse a trip to your local hospital wouldn't be a bad idea.

StillNotANewUser · 17/01/2020 16:45

You’re filling more than a pad an hour and feeling dizzy. This needs A&E to check it’s nothing life-threatening such as an infection/sepsis from the IUD, sorry OP.

Think I might see how it goes tonight. Don't fancy spending Friday night at the walk in. If it's no better tomorrow I'll have to. Can't carry on like this much longer.

I could have written this. Also had Copper Coil fitted New Year's Eve and period started Wednesday. It's been awful!
Really heavy bleeding, clots, cramps and I feel so moody.
I've googled and it seems to be normal but I have no idea. I'm going to see it out over the weekend. I'm due to go back for a check in 3 weeks.

TheGoodNamesWereAlreadyTaken · 17/01/2020 21:41

That's so strange @NewMeStartsHere fingers crossed it calms down over the weekend and ends soon. And also next month will be better! For both of us.

As a pp said - if you were approaching menopause it would be normal, sounds like what I go through every month. However taking your age & the coil into consideration maybe at least call 111 talk through your symptoms, it’s not worth risking your health for.

rainbowlou · 17/01/2020 21:50

After having an ectopic I was advised against having the copper coil as it can apparently increase risk of them.
I don’t want to worry you unnecessarily but could it be that?
