Hormones causing hangover-type feelings?

GryffinDora · 07/01/2020 13:40

I seem to suffer randomly throughout the month with days where I just feel like I've got a bad hangover. Headache that doesn't shift with painkillers, sometimes loose bowels, inability to concentrate and any exertion exhausting. Eating sugar can make me feel briefly better but not for long. I can't connect this to any specific stage in my cycle but that's because I have horrible long cycles anyway. Does this sound familiar to anybody?

sounds like every day for me at the moment!!

GryffinDora · 07/01/2020 16:11

To be honest it's a relief to hear that this sounds familiar to somebody else. But also, much sympathy!

Migraine possibly?

GryffinDora · 07/01/2020 16:33

@noodledoodler I do get migraines and these are like mini ones, but I can function (albeit poorly!) so hesitate to call it migraine. When I have what I consider to be a proper migraine I am completely bed bound

I wouldn't even say it's a headache as such, more a dull, heavy head sort of feeling. I'm sure it's hormonal, although recent blood tests have shown high platelet count (I thought i might be anaemic) which is likely to be related to the long heavy periods (have to go back for more retesting to see if it goes down) so mine fits some of the symptoms of that. Could you be anaemic?

GryffinDora · 07/01/2020 16:41

Not anaemic, I get the dull foggy head too some days (with lethargy) but this is definitely pain. But not like a normal tension headache cos painkillers won't touch it, they just don't work

I've been to different doctors a few times over the years but it never gets gotten to the bottom of and just gets dismissed! Tough hormonal lady luck I guess 🤷‍♀️

How old are you OP? In my experience migraines can change with age and hormones, you don't have to have a headache to be having an attack. Fuzziness and tummy upset can be symptoms of migraine (though as a sufferer you probably already know that ). Hope you get to the bottom of it.

GryffinDora · 07/01/2020 17:23

Pushing 40! Thanks @noodledoodler that's interesting,'I hadn't thought to consider it as migraine before. But it is similarly debilitating as a full attack

So you get aches and pains too? Maybe a migraine tracker might help confirm or eliminate 🌺🌺🌺

GryffinDora · 07/01/2020 17:31

No aches and pains, just the headache. It's always dominated my life but some days I can't push through now. Bloody hormones!

I get this too and it has got much worse over the last couple of years. Mostly during and a few days after period and then also when ovulating and also randomly like today.
I also get migraine ( debilitating shut in room type ones) and while this is different I still think it is a type of migraine because the only thing that will shift it is triptans. Not great though as I take too many of them but struggle to function if I don't.

GryffinDora · 08/01/2020 06:20

Thanks @Marmitepasta, maybe I'll go to the doc and ask to try triptans. I did try them before for the shut in a room type migraine and didn't find them as effective as migraleve madly. But maybe they'd shift this other thing. It's a relief to hear that it's familiar to others, thank you
