Uterine Ablation failure

Hi Guys, I had uterine ablation 6 months ago. It was initially life changing after years of extremely heavy periods, flooding and massive clotting(sorry if tmi). I had been soaking through 60-80 sanitary products a month and was very anaemic, so it’s been such a huge relief and improved my quality of life. It initially worked, but this month I have had a heavy period and clotting again-previous months there was only a tiny bit of spotting or nothing at all. While it’s possible some of lining had been left, I thought it wouldn’t grow back so am confused as to why it might be this bad this month. Has anyone had a similar experience? I feel very down as I don’t want to go back to how it was.

Yes me - I was back to how it was within 9 months with much more pain than before.

I take naproxen and have the option of taking something to stop my periods for a year but I am not sure about that right now (it’s a prostate cancer drug).

Thank you for posting. I thought it might just be me as I had thought it wasn’t possible to be that bad again(I knew it could come back, but it was a shock that it wasn’t gradually heavier). I’ll see what happen next month and speak to my GP about the medication you mentioned. They never mentioned this as an option before.

Surely there is another way of stopping periods?
I had flooding last night. For the first time. I want to go to gp on monday. I am 49 so dont need the pill but i thought i might ask if i can take a pill back to back until im through peri menopause.

GoddessOfTransformativeWrath · 04/01/2020 20:08

I was terrified at i was at home. If that had happened to me at work 😭😭😵
Luckily i found some cyloxapron ? And itvstopped the flooding but not the period.

You have my sympathies @HCBELLE1981

You need to get referred back to a gynaecologist, I see mine every three months.

I have got another option that I can’t remember the details of.

I am in the verge of going for the injections as whenever my period stops if I exert myself I bleed - sick of it.

I have been offered a hysterectomy but it isn’t a good time for me (newly single parent to an anxious young teen who wouldn’t cope with it well).

Not exactly the same situation but I had a period which went on 8 weeks with spells of very heavy bleeding and clots. The problem was put down to peri menopause and a small fibroid. I ended up with depleted iron levels and tried TXA to reduce the bleeding but it was only partially successful. I was then put on Noristherone (not sure on spelling but it is the drug used to delay periods) and it made me feel suicidal as I withdrew from the drug. Finally, I was put on the mini pill (desogestrol) and I have had no periods for 2 months now. The mini pill apparently prevents the lining of the womb building up. On the negative side, it can increase the risk of breast cancer but studies are uncertain. I was just desperate to stop the bleeding as it was relentless and I was beginning to get exhausted. Might not work long run but it has given me a break! It may give you another option. Another thought is the Mirena Coil.

Yeah it totally sucks! It happened at work once. It was so bad It filled up my shoes. Luckily my colleague had some yoga pants, otherwise I would have had to go home on the bus like that. I will head back to the GP this week to see about getting referred back to gynaecologist. I wish I could see gynaecologist every three months, but he doesn’t take heavy periods that seriously.

I don’t react well to brith control medication, that’s why I was happy to have the ablation. Shame it hasn’t worked.

I had an ablation a few years back which improved things slightly but not to the point where I was happy so I was offered a second. Unfortunately the second couldn’t be done because the first ablation had cause me to develop Asherman’s syndrome and there’s scar tissue preventing hysteroscope to my uterus.

The only other option I was given was to have a hysterectomy which I’m not keen on due to my age, I’m only mid thirties.

I decided to just live with it as there was an improvement, my periods were still rather heavy but I wasn’t having the horrible flooding. Over the past year or so though they’ve been steadily getting worse and the last couple I’ve started flooding again Sad I’ve also been getting more pain. It’s not as bad as it was but it starts much sooner and is often concentrated in a specific area. It happens much more around ovulation as well which I’ve been to the GP about (had external and internal ultrasounds) but there was no sign of anything wrong with my ovaries so I was waved off.

Apparently late onset endometrial ablation failure is a thing and it sounds very much like what I’m experiencing. I don’t get on with the pill and my GP agreed any kind of hormonal treatment options aren’t appropriate for me so it looks like my only options are surgical; either a hysterectomy once my periods become unbearable again or try and find a gynaecologist who can do the LOEAF corrective surgery privately.

Refuse to be fobbed off like this and do not merely keep on putting up with such either. You need a gynae for further evaluation as these types of issue are well outside a GPs general remit.

re your comment:-

Endometriosis may be a possible cause of all this. It can also cause heavy bleeding to arise. Any symptoms that are cyclical in nature and or get worse up to and including menses should be checked out to see if endometriosis is present.

It is not picked up on any internal or external (and re the external what was the point of them doing that type of scan at all?) ultrasound scans as the endometricial deposits are so very small.

SutterCane · 07/01/2020 03:44

I know I should go back Attila, and I probably will before too long, but I’ve just not had the energy thus far, pathetic as that sounds Blush

Endometriosis has never been mentioned as a possibility at any point during the process. The ultrasounds were to check for any sign of ovarian cysts, of which there were none, and that plus a (clear) smear test was all they were prepared to do.

I’ll definitely push for another referral when I do go back and if they’re not keen I’m quite tempted to look and see how much it would be to go private.
