Recurring thrush (desperate)

kittykat818 · 20/12/2019 22:15

Hello everyone,
I am 21 and have been suffering with thrush for two years (ever since losing my virginity.) I feel like I have tried everything; multigyn, cotton underwear, organic pads, 6month course of fluconazole, even a sugar-free diet and nothing has helped stop it permanently. It affects every aspect of my life including my university studies and relationship (yes I have tried treating my boyfriend) and I am so desperate. Has anyone else dealt with this and found a solution, I am so desperate. I have tried going back on a longer course of fluconazole again but I was still getting thrush while taking it so I really am confused as what to what to do.

PLEASE HELP

I had this recently and GP has said that recent research shows if you are on the pill you are more prone to thrush. However I am not and do all the other tips and tricks to prevent recurrent utis.
They prescribed a 8 week pessary course, one a week. And this cleared it completely and hasn't come back since. Touch wood x

jayde28 · 21/12/2019 01:16

Just to double check is your boyfriend treating himself otherwise you can pass it back and forth x

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 01:30

@jayde28 Hey, how long has it been since you've come off the pessaries and yeah he has been xx

Have you tried grapefruit seed extract?

theworstwife · 21/12/2019 07:37

@kittykat818 no nystatin pessaries would need to be ordered. They are usually only used for non albicans thrush species but can be used if nothing else seems to be working.

jayde28 · 21/12/2019 10:29

I completed the course in August and fingers crossed so far whereas before I felt like I was getting in every couple of weeks. The doctor checked for diabetes et. And then prescribed the course as when I had used the one time use she said it wasn't clearingjt 100%

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 11:50

@WinkysTeatowel Hey yeah I used some tablets for a couple of months but didn't seem to do much, did they work for you?

@theworstwife would they need to be ordered online assuming UK doctors don't prescribe them

OP have you been tested for trichomonas?

Have GUM checked type and sensitivity of Candida?

Wanderingbluebell · 21/12/2019 12:11

I also had this a few years ago - fluconazole wouldn’t touch it. Weekly pessaries sorted it for me as well - I was prescribed 6 months’ worth but stopped after 3 months and haven’t had thrush since Smile.

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 13:06

@helpmum2003 Hi yes I have been tested a couple of times for trichomonas and everything has come back negative, and I have checked the type I have the usual candida Albicans, they are currently checking the sensitivity now!

@wanteringbluebell Wow that's great, may I ask how long you were suffering for?

I used to suffer loads with thrush and found it was down to the copper coil. I was suffering copper intoxication, I see you used to be on the pill but not what your using now if anything. Just throwing my experience out there in case anyone else suffers also.

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 13:34

@ifoundthebread Hi yeah I have heard others say this before so will avoid the coil in the future!

theworstwife · 21/12/2019 14:13

@kittykat818 they can be prescribed in the UK - you would need to see a GUM consultant

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 14:27

@theworstwife Okay thank you, will look into this!

@kittykat818 I had nipple/oral thrush when breastfeeding my daughter repeatedly for a year and when I started taking the GSE it did coincide with it finally going!

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 15:27

@winkysteatowel Hi can I ask what GSE is sorry?

I heard thrush can be ‘fed’ trough eating too much sugar. I don’t know how your eating pattern is but I’d check for (hidden) sugars in your food and cut them out of your diet.
Good luck 🍀

Lolacat1234 · 21/12/2019 15:40

I had this. Tried everything you have. I think it was hormonal as it eventually went away when I fell pregnant with my son and never came back touch wood. Not suggesting you use pregnancy as a cure lol but perhaps investigate the possibility of it being hormonal xx

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 15:57

@honeybee85 Hi, yeah I have heard this a lot too, I completely cut out all sugar, carbs, fruit even for around a month but was still suffering and lost an unhealthy amount of weight! But I am still trying to be careful with sugar in my day to day diet.

@lolacat1234 Yes a few other women have said this to me, this is one of the main reasons I came of the combined pill but hasn't seemed to help, will ask the doctor if there are any other steps I can take or tests I can do to check hormone levels .

@kittykat818

That really sucks. I had reoccurring trush and my boyfriend and I kept infecting each other.
GP adviced me to sleep without underwear on so the area could ‘air’.

I don’t want to give anyone advice that isn’t medically approved (as far as I know) but what I did and what helped with the itching was to soak a tampon in unsweetened fat Greek yoghurt and insert it and left it there for maybe an hour or so.
It helped me but then again, I don’t know if it’s a responsable thing to do for anyone.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 21/12/2019 16:10

Iron your knickers.

just washing isn't enough, ironing kills it.

WinkysTeatowel · 21/12/2019 16:11

Sorry: GSE is grapefruit seed extract. I got some from Holland and Barratt.

aliensprig · 21/12/2019 16:17

Suffered badly with it throughout most of my pregnancy, had to use the pessary/cream treatment sooo many times. Then I switched to cloth pantyliners instead of disposables and started washing carefully with water only - problem sorted, no more canesten for about 3 months now. Hope you get it sorted soon, it truly is miserable.

kittykat818 · 21/12/2019 16:30

@Honeybee85 Did you and your boyfriend manage to stay together it is causing a bit of a strain on my relationship at the moment! I do try to sleep with out underwear at the moment already, do you think the tampon just helped with itchy or was what cured you?

@ChardonnaysDistantCousin Okay will try this, thanks.

@aliensprig Hi I use all cotton organic pantyliners already do you mean the washable kind?

Honeybee85 · 21/12/2019 16:36

@kittykat818

We broke up but it had nothing to do with our sexlife (ironically it was the best part of our relationship). I think the tampon didn’t cure me but it certainly relieved the itching, it was so hard to not scratch which can worsen the infection Blush
