Constipation (sorry not very exciting)

Hi

I'm sorry if this is too much info but I take prescription medication which makes me constipated. I would be grateful for any suggestions or anything which has worked for you.

Just about everything I have tried gives me a rumbling stomach and wind even if it does work. I am still searching for the "holy grail" of IBS relief lol

Things I have tried:

Aloe vera tablets
Lactoluse
Laxido and movicol
Peppermit oil capsules
Peppermint tea
All bran every morning
Lots of water
Castor oil - hit and miss
Senokot
IBS capsules
Prune juice
Dates

Charcoal tablets don't help with the wind

Senokot - works but gives me a bit of wind. I don't take it regularly as it can lead to a lazy bowel

I've also got flaxseed capsules in the cupboard but I realised after I bought them that they can give you wind so I haven't tried them.

Anything else I can add to my IBS cupboard? Confused

I find flaxseed to be really effective, with no wind at all. I soak a couple of spoonfuls of the seeds in a glass of water overnight and drink the slimy results in the morning. It's gentle and effective, and has no side effects. I admit that the texture is not particularly nice but it's worth it.

Are you thinking loads and loads too.

Maslinpan - thanks for the suggestion. I could try this at the weekend in case they give me wind. I seem to have a sensitive stomach. How big should the spoonfuls be - teaspoons?

The only thing which works for me is Bisacodyl. It's not otc

Warm water with a few tea spoons of fresh lemon in it should help

snowdropdaisy · 20/11/2019 19:11

Thanks - I will try this as well

A flat tablespoon of seeds - start with one, and see how you go. I have two, in a normal glass of water. I hope it helps!

Hmmm! You've tried a lot of things already - have you tried Fybogel? That helps me sometimes. Then there is mebeverine/colofac for IBS

Also - do you get the 'urge' but then can't go? If so try raising your feet when sitting on the loo. It helps me :)

It might be worth asking to be referred to a dietician, who should be able to help you identify foods/supplements that help keep you regular, without upsetting your stomach. Wish I’d seen them much earlier instead of getting dietary advice from GPs, who aren’t really trained in that area.

Water, water, water water water and then a nice cup of peppermint tea, fennel tea, all of the hippy teas.

Wise friend of mine (who prescribes medicines) said it's a no to the bulking agents when it's opioid induced constipation, you want to find stuff that will draw water into the bowel (osmotic). I see you've tried lactulose there's also polyethylene glycol.

Also, for me, dried apricots and fresh pears.

And another large glass of water, especially if you eat a high fibre diet.

Thanks for all your suggestions, much appreciated Smile
