Periods that last weeks?

I've been going through this for around two years now. Will often go months without a period and then when I finally get one it can last 6 weeks.

I've been to the doctors and they said it's possible PCOS however I wasn't aware PCOS could cause such long menstruation and they haven't said for sure that is what's causing this. I've had an external ultrasound which showed nothing and blood tests, apparently my hormone levels are high. Still going to the doctors just waiting on more bloods to compare to the ones I had last time.

I was just wondering if anyone else had experiences this because people look horrified when I say I can have a period for 6 weeks. It's really worrying me.

Have you not as yet seen a gynaecologist

You need to be seeing such a person and not just a GP

Hi OP,

I had exactly the same problem for a year. After the first long period I had a scan which showed nothing, ovaries all clear and I was discharged from the gynaecologist and told it was a 'one off' bleed. But unfortunately the bleeding continued, periods got longer and longer until I was almost always bleeding or spotting. I went back and forth to the GP, A&E and eventually managed to see a gynaecologist and have a scan/blood work done again. Turns out I have PCOS quite severely. The combined length of my ovaries by this stage were 30cm. And my hormones were all over the place. It explained a lot. I also had a biopsy done of the lining of my womb to rule anything else out and that was clear.

How long ago was your scan? Could you have another one done perhaps?

I have PCOS, I could go months without a period and then have one lasting a couple weeks (never 6 weeks though). It was 'normal' for me, but obviously not ideal.

@AttilaTheMeerkat

I'm hoping to see a gynaecologist after I've had my bloods done.

When I've mentioned further tests to the doctor she told me that it's probably stress and lots of women have issues at my age. But I don't think it's fair for her assume that before I'd been looked over by the gynaecologist.

@byefeliciabye

I had the one off bleed explanation the first time that this, it's just frustrating when you know yourself this isn't normal for your body. Did you manage to get the bleeding to stop?

Hoping to go back for another ultrasound. It's just odd because my first doctor said bloods were fine and no issues but when I went to a different doctor he got my blood test up and said although it's not flagging anything serious up my hormone levels are higher but just under the amount they would associate with PCOS.
