Mini pill, will it affect my mental health?

I am prone to suffering from depression and anxiety (undiagnosed but I know for definite that I have them both), and I've read the combined pill exacerbates the condition even more. The mini pill I've read is less effective but if it is taken at the same time every single day, it is 99% effective. Has anyone experienced anything with the mini pill and will the GP prescribe this if I request the mini pill and not the combined pill? I'm also overweight so the combined pill will increase my risk of blood clots even more won't it? I've read horror stories online already about blood clots and that worries me massively :(

I took the mini pill for ten years after I had a blood clot which was potentially linked to the combined pill. I took cerezette / cerelle- these brands (and any others containing desogestrel) give you a 12 hour window in which they are effective so they are a lot easier to manage than traditional mini pills, and less likely to trigger anxiety if you don't take it at the exact same time. I didn't have any periods at all and I felt very 'level' - I personally liked this, but if you want to have a monthly bleed then the mini pill isn't for you. The only down side for me is that when I came off the pill to try to conceive it took best part of a year for my periods to become regular, this could be completely unrelated but it's worth knowing to allow plenty of time for your body to settle down if you want to TTC in the future. The doctor should have no issue with letting you try this pill if you want to. Good luck!

Ps re mental health, whilst I feel that mine was better on the mini pill, everyone reacts differently so if you don't feel it's working for you then ask your GP for advice Smile

I've been on the mini pill for about 10 years and I have never have any issues at all with it- mental health wise or blood clots or anything else for that matter.
There will always be horror stories with any form of contraception, it's very individual.
Hopefully it works well for you

I love the mini pill. I have no periods on it and the overall health risks are much lower than the combined pill. However, it does not contain oestrogen so as you approach menopause you might have more symptoms than you would do on the combined pill (as this replaces the oestrogen). I use Ovestin cream to help with menopausal vaginal symptoms. It’s just something to be aware of - some women struggle psychologically when they are low on oestrogen. You can take HRT at the same time as the mini pill if this is an issue.
