Uterine abalation

Runnerduck34 · 27/10/2019 22:49

I'm due to have a uterine ablation this Friday to try and get my very heavy prolonged periods under control.
Has anyone else had this procedure and can tell me what their experience was like- good or bad?

I had this surgery 18 months ago. It has made a noticeable difference in blood loss and is less painful. I still have periods every month though and they’ve not trailed off as I had hoped they would. Recovery was two weeks off work but only the first week was uncomfortable, it can be very painful in the first few days post op. It was worth it for me.

I had one 2.5 years ago - unfortunately this provided no respite for me and I was advised to have a sterilisation at the same time as pregnancy risks were too high.

Personally I feel as though I now have the worst of both worlds and am desperately seeking an alternative solution!!

Thank you for sharing your experiences, I feel exhausted for about half the month due to low iron levels and really want the heavy bleeding to stop. however since going on tranexamic acid although my periods are still long and heavy I haven't had any more "flooding" episodes. So now wondering if I can hang on til the menopause ( I'm 48) . My grandmother died of uterine cancer in her 50s and I've read the procedure makes the detection of womb cancer more difficult so that's playing at the back of my mind too.

I was due to have it but decided not too. I had a hysteroscopy without GA which was fine but the consultant told me that the ablation would be done the same way without GA and I chickened out tbh.

I was told that I wouldn’t need any recovery time but after reading up on it I think that isn’t the case- I can’t take time out at the mo so am back to square one.

MiltonRoad · 28/10/2019 10:52

Weirdly since the hysteroscopy my periods have dropped back to normalish although my iron is still only 12.

LizziesTwin · 28/10/2019 10:54

I had one in June, my periods were unbelievably heavy & long, 32 consecutive days of flooding last winter. I had a GA, the OB/GYN couldn’t give me a hysteroscopy when I was conscious as it was too painful. I’ve posted about this a few times, please do an advanced search using my name & you’ll find the posts (on mobile).

I had it done a couple of years ago and fibroids removed too. The procedure just gave me period type pains, recovery was a good couple of weeks I think as I felt very weak and tired post GA.
I’ve gone from 9days every 26 of mad heavy bleeding and anaemia to 4-5 days of what I think most people would regard as a normal period. Life changing.

NorthEndGal · 28/10/2019 10:56

Had it done in 2013, haven't had a period since. I had zero complications, and was back to work in days. t gave me my life back

Daaps · 28/10/2019 10:57

I had mine 3 years ago. After the first few weeks of watery/bloody discharge I haven’t had a drop of blood since. It’s literally the best thing I’ve ever done. Completely life changing. I had a few days of bad achy pain and stayed off work for 5 days altogether.

GoldenBlue · 28/10/2019 11:02

I had mine in May under GA and no bleeding since 10 days after. I'm on the mini pill but was before the op and was bleeding 20 days a month or more.
Very little pain but quite week from the GA. I was off for 2 weeks.

camrose · 28/10/2019 12:40

I had one in 13 years ago and had the mire a coil fitted as well under GA.
I went from constant flooding ( with v severer anaemia) to no blooding. It was fab. It gave me my life back and was much less traumatic than a hysterectomy would have been ( my other alternative).

Runnerduck34 · 28/10/2019 14:58

Thank you everyone for responding, feeling more positive now, what was the recovery like? I was told by my gynaecologist that I should be back to normal within 2-3 days, looking at the replies it seems this might be optimistic! Thou I've told work it would take a week to recover, just in case Wink

I didn’t have a ga. they told me to take the pain relief before the procedure (1 hour maybe) and keep on taking it at the right time over the next few days whether I was in pain or not. I remember being in quite a bit of pain the first couple of days but it was manageable. I imagine a ga would make you a bit more whacked out.

MissSmiley · 29/10/2019 14:25

I had this (novasure) 4 years ago and haven't had a drop of period since. Had it done for very heavy periods at 42. No GA but had gas and air. I would thoroughly recommend it
