Hysterectomy

Hi, I am having a hysterectomy done next month but am getting really cold feet. I have heard that afterwards having sex will feel different and orgasms won't be as intense. If you have had a hysterectomy did this happen to you? Thanks

What is the reason for your hysterectomy?

KrispyNoodles · 20/10/2019 12:01

I have heavy and painful periods which is causing me to be anemic. They also make me feel generally unwell so I can't leave the house. They're very long and happen really frequently.

What procedure will they be using?

KrispyNoodles · 20/10/2019 12:05

A laparoscopic total hysterectomy

Well I had one about 2 years ago. I've observed none of the side effects you mention. In fact the opposite really. No longer having the symptoms I did has lead to a rise in energy and libido. Not having periods has made me much more relaxed about sex in general.

Immediately after the op I was very tired, probably about 6 weeks to feel back to normal. From there I've honestly gone from strength to strength.

Anecdotally for a male perspective, my oh has been with two women who have had hysterectomies and says he noticed no difference at all either time. Physically that would make sense as there is no real contact with the cervix during sex.

It's understandable to be concerned about surgery but I think the things you are focusing on are unrealistic concerns.

That's great to hear, I'm glad yours went well for you. Thanks

I had a total abdominal hysterectomy earlier this year.

I can confirm absolutely no change to the strength and frequency has occurred for me. My sex drive is actually higher because I feel so much better.

DH reports no difference from his perspective either.

great, thanks MeganChips. Good to hear it was beneficial to you ;-)

I experienced a reduction in intensity in orgasms and a lot more vaginal dryness. The dryness and sensation improved somewhat with estradiol pessaries but the intensity of orgasms didn't improve. I do think uterine contractions did contribute a lot to my orgasms though, they were certainly always very intense in pregnancy.
My hysterectomy was an emergency one due to placenta accreta in my fifth pregnancy. Before that periods were not overly painful or heavy and my uterus was not impacting my life like yours is so I miss it! I believe my experience is common-ish but not talked about a lot. If I were suffering like you are on a day to day basis, I might think it was worth the sacrifice? My ovaries were spared but I may have been approaching perimenopause at the time.

biMum5 Thank you for your message, that must have been a really hard time for you. I think you're right about it not being talked about, I have seen 2 different specialists about hysterectomy and neither mentioned that this could happen. All the best

Hi. I had the same procedure a year and a half ago.

No worries on that front. My husband reports no difference fro his perspective either.

Perunatop · 20/10/2019 13:06

Have you tired the Mirena coil? May be worth trying if you are having doubts about hysterectomy.

KrispyNoodles · 20/10/2019 14:36

greatdomestic. Thanks for your message, glad things went well for you.
Perunatop. I have heard so many bad things about the Mirena coil but not going to rule it out completely

Hysterectomy & oophorectomy had no effect on my orgasms. I still experience contractions, but they are vaginal rather than uterine.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/10/2019 14:39

I felt better than ever after mine - in every way. Don't worry but do all the physio they tell you.

KrispyNoodles · 22/10/2019 09:00

Nunsnetting and CaptainMyCaptain, thanks for your messages.

Krispynoodles, someone mentioned the Mirena coil up there.. please do a lot of research before getting one, this coil is evil! Nearly killed me and I am not being dramatic. I was heavily bleeding for weeks (been told to be patient by my GP as bleeding is expected.. ha!) and ended up with an emergency surgery and no haemoglobin left in me.
It is known to cause complications and irritations to the uterus, heavy bleeding and if you have fabroids or polyps it will make it worth. Many women suffered from issues associated to this particular coil.
I ended up with sterilisation clips instead but unfortunately for me something went wrong with the left one and I just had a surgery to get these removed also! If my pain persists I may well be heading to hysterectomy soon myself so reading with much interest...

KrispyNoodles · 23/11/2019 10:20

username198372 that sounds horrible! I have always hated the thought of the coil but that has made my mind up for me. I decided not to have the hysterectomy as after researching endometriosis I found out that it can come back even after having a hysterectomy so I am asking my specialist to do a laparoscopy to see exactly what is going on. Thank you for your message and I hope you find something that works x
