Bleeding for 6 weeks. Panicking

Hi,

Hoping someone with similar experiences can talk me down. I've convinced myself I've got cervical cancer Shock

I've been bleeding for 6 weeks, some light pelvic pain but not agonising. I have a smear test at the end of this week but according to my surgery I'm around a year late for this. I didn't get a letter Sad

Terrified that it will be cancer, everything I've read suggests that symptoms only appear in late stage cervical cancer.

I'm late 30s, periods have always been regular until now. Thanks for any advice or words of wisdom

There are a couple of us bleeding and going through ultra sounds/ smears going through this together.

I am terribly paranoid over missing my smear and I know my 3 year date is due in the next month or so.
I’m trying to avoid over thinking and am keeping busy, though it’s easier said than done isn’t it, I had an ultra sound today so. I’m now playing the waiting game.

Howaboutthisone · 25/09/2019 21:11

I obviously can't say that is absolutely isn't that. But I just wanted to post to let you know that I'm totally up to date with smears, all clear on those. Then this time last year I started bleeding lots even though I was on the pill. Got to march this year and the bleeding was constant and flooding level. I've had ultrasounds, a hysteroscopy with a biopsy and been put on medication to stop the bleeding. The biopsy cake back clear and they're going to remove fibroids that they think might be causing it, though they're not certain.
So whilst the bleeding could be a sing of that, there are other things that it could be and oaths they can take to sort it for you.
I hope that you get good news and that they get you sorted very soon.

I’ve just had a transvaginal scan after heavy bleeding that was ongoing, I was worried but after scan got told no issues take iron tablets basically and monitor the future bleeds

chuckeee · 26/09/2019 09:11

Thanks for the replies. I've woken up and it's heavier. I think it's unlikely it will stop in time for my smear.

Trying so hard not to panic but I've been in tears this morning at the thought of finding out it's bad news.

I had this and it was uterine polyps, please try not to worry and book an appointment with the GP. The new smear test result will also be useful for the GP.

chuckeee · 26/09/2019 09:54

Thank you. I don't think they'll be able to do the smear if I'm bleeding? I've read it affects the results so they won't do it.

They can still do a smear but may need to do a further one again in future. I've just had a smear done earlier this week while bleeding (started 5 days after last period and still going so two weeks at this point).

I'm very anxious as last time I had bleeding was referred for colposcopy, confirmed ectropic but also did biopsy (had been getting clear smears and had them repeatedly due to bleeding) and had CIN2. Treatment was fine but complications a few days later resulted in uncontrollable bleeding and a stressful trip to A&E where they couldn't actually sort it that night so spent a night in a ward in a puddle of blood. Every time my period is a bit off since I panic.

Not sure what my issue is this time - I think too much blood to just be cervical ectropion again and GP said cervix looked healthy so guessing not a cervical polyp.

GP should get smear results by end of this week but now just waiting and desperately hoping bleeding stops.

chuckeee · 26/09/2019 11:33

I hope your bleeding stops (as well as mine). I'm scared stiff and can't stop thinking about it, just trying to give my head a wobble but then I keep going back to the worst possible scenarios.

I'll go for my smear of course, I'm just hoping that they will do it. My friend said she was turned away because she was bleeding. But it's weeks and weeks to be able to get an appointment, I can't go on like this Sad

Just wanted to say don’t wait for your smear / smear results - book a GP appointment. They can still examine you if bleeding, and may do the smear at the same time depending on your GP. They can often take a smear if beeping however it may not be clear enough to test in the lab. That’s why it’s important to see your GP - they can make an urgent referral to a gynaecologist for investigations.

I had very similar about this time last year. Was so terrified I ended up seeing a private gynaecologist. Had full examinations & ultrasound but all clear - she said it was probably just my (usually very regular) cycles muddled up.

Book a GP appointment ASAP - get it investigated & hopefully your mind put at ease.

chuckeee · 26/09/2019 11:51

Thank you. Can I ask how you went about finding a private gynaecologist? I am happy to pay if I can't get a gp appointment soon

That is terrible that you have to wait weeks for an appointment. I think you should go to GP or private at this point but in the past our practice nurse does smears and its much easier to get an appointment with her (amd she has more time to take a full history and discuss any concerns).

If you are in the UK you should be able to google and find someone. You could try searching on the Jo's Trust forum too.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/09/2019 12:06

OP i had this once and put it down to stress- turned out it was eptopic pregnancy and highly dangerous. Go to the GP

Sipperskipper · 26/09/2019 20:37

I just googled my local private hospital and a list of gynaecologists came up. I was able to see one the next day.

Keep us posted, hope you get some answers soon.

I had abnormal bleeding for 3 months which I assumed was menopause related. I was about to make a gp appt when my smear call up came through. I rang and let them know and they said to go ahead with the smear.

However, whilst there are many explanations for unexpected it is best to also make a gp appt now.

catnidge · 26/09/2019 20:59

Unexpected bleeding
Phone fingers Hmm

Rosecat22 · 04/10/2019 11:53

I’m also having unexpected bleeding - I’ve basically been bleeding non- stop for the last month.

First I had a normal period, then a few days later I started spotting which continued for a week. It then stopped for a few days, I spotted again for a day and then I had another full period! Five days after that ended I am now spotting yet again 🙁 it’s been really distressing and I’m off to the docs again this afternoon.

When I went two weeks ago she did a physical exam and took some swabs which I assumed included a smear but haven’t heard anything back except that I had BV.

So stressed out about this.

Akrotiri1 · 06/10/2019 13:57

I know it is hard but try not too panic. Are you on the pill? Are you peri-menopausal as either of these could cause changes in your monthly bleed, as can many other things.

Last Oct I bled solid for 4 mnths - so heavy around my periods it was running down my legs and had to use incontinence pants! Like you, I had missed a smear so also managed to convince myself it was cervical cancer. I had a smear when the bleeding was lighter ie not period bleeding, and came back clear. However when the smear was taken they found I had a cervical polyp, which once I was referred to a specialist, turned out to be 3. These were removed and the bleeding stopped after my next period.

I was also sent for a vaginal ultrasound, as having ruled out cervical cancer, I then convinced myself I had ovarian or womb cancer!!!! However it turned out to be fibroids, which I still have, but would rather live with atm.

I am 46 and approaching menopause so probably hormonal related in my case. The best thing you can do is consult your Dr - I know easier said than done, as in our local surgeriey is a 6 week wait for a 10 min consult, so no wonder we end up self diagnosing and thinking the worse.....

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
