Waiting time for an internal ultrasound?

Hi ladies,

I've been having horrendous periods and finally went to the doctor to get some help. She thinks I may have endometriosis and has referred me on for an internal ultrasound.

Problem was that was 10 weeks ago now and I've heard nothing. I've rang the surgery evey week for the last 3 weeks to chase it up but they keep saying "oh that is a long time, leave it with us" and then I hear nothing.

My periods are getting worse and I'm starting to get really worried to be honest. Anybody know how long referrals usually take?

I've just been referred for an internal today because of bleeding during/after intercourse and spotting between periods and really heavy periods. The nurse said she thinks about 4 weeks, but I guess it depends on the area!

I would phone the GP surgery again but you should be referred to a gynae rather than seemingly just having an internal ultrasound. I'd be asking them about such a referral as well.

The internal ultrasound scan may not detect endo if it is there (I have had more of these than I care to mention and none of these detected the endo in my uterine cavity).

Internal ultrasound is v unlikely to detect endo, but can rule out other things. I have endo, it took a long time to get as far as a gynae and get a diagnosis. In the end I pretty much had to stamp my feet and say I need a gynae not a GP. As soon as I got to the gynae everything happened much more quickly. Be assertive, be a pain in the ass, stamp your feet. In your shoes I would be making an appointment to speak directly to the GP and keep doing so until you have an appointment with the gynae.
