Abdominal separation

I had a pretty dire pregnancy. Worked out every day prepregnancy but developed terrible PGP which meant I could walk very well. Skip forward 7 months, I'm back exercising doing loads of core work and today had my stomach felt by post natal PT and apparently I still have abdominal separation.

Did anyone else still have this at 7 months and did it heal on its own?

DD has this still after 4 years. I am very proud of the way she has risen above this and accepted a pregnant-looking tummy with a good grace and common sense, when others might have been in a right flap about it. That's my girl!

What an astoundingly sanctimonious response...

OP, not uncommon at all - best advice is to STOP with the core work until you’ve had some proper guidance on this - can easily make the problem worse doing the wrong stuff. Find a good post-natal PT if possible, and if not that then the muutuu system is great. Can definitely get better, try not to worry too much.

Like your daughter I'm not worried about the external appearance - I'm more concerned about the internal muscles and the impact this has on an already painful pelvis and lower back. A weak core can lead to poor posture, back and pelvic pain.

And if you were implying it's me "in a flap" by asking a simple question to other mums that's honestly ridiculous 🤨

@NuffingChora thanks! I'm seeing a post natal osteopath next week which I hope will help. Eeeek I've been going to a weekly yoga and core class with 20 mins of abs work 🙈

I had this and it took about five months of physiotherapy to close the gap after birth. The pregnancy look went down after doing Pilates, I will always have a slight pouch but that’s motherhood.

After you give birth make sure you ask your midwife for a physio referral. Pilates will definitely help as well. It can be fixed without surgery Smile

Well - talk about putting a negative spin on a positive post designed to help the OP deal with it by knowing others are in the same boat and have managed OK!!

Dear me!

But that wasn’t what it was though, was it?

OP is well within her rights to have concerns re. abdominal separation, as quite apart from the aesthetics, it can have a significant effect on core strength, and potentially cause back pain, pelvic pain, pelvic floor issues, continence issues, constipation... should I go on? Your response implied she should suck it up and get on with it. I’m very happy for your daughter if her diastasis recti hasn’t caused her any issues, and she is more than entitled to approach it as she sees fit, however for those that it does cause issues for, your sanctimony should not put them off seeking advice and help.
