UTI symptoms but no infection

daniel0112 · 31/08/2019 14:43

I have recently started getting UTIs after sex with a new partner (4 UTIs in past 2 months). The previous UTIs were cleared up after a 3 day course of antibiotics. Recently I got another so I had a 3 day course of trimethoprim, nothing changed so my go gave me a 3 day course of nitrofurantoin. But I still have constant pressure on my bladder and the feeling that I need a wee. Also the dipstick test done by the gp is negative so she says there are no bacteria and no sign of white blood cells either, indicating that there is no infection. My urine was sent off for a culture, but this came back as completely normal too. My gp is now organising an appointment for an ultrasound, but I still fee like the symptoms must be to do with the original UTI! I'm losing my mind about what to do and am in fear that I will feel like this for the rest of my life. I'm only 23 and it's really getting me down. Any advice on what might be causing my symptom of constantly needing to wee?

Cystitis maybe?

Hidingtonothing · 02/09/2019 15:42

I read up on this a lot as it was a recurrent problem for me. Never really got a definitive answer about what caused it but did find out about a supplement called D mannose which has sorted it for me. Seen it recommended on here a lot since, seems to work for a lot of people.

I really feel for you. Get a culture?

FYI I started using this sachet called Uquora and it seems to be working. Drink it before sex, pee after sex, take the capsule (this has probiotics or something). I think D mannose figures in here, but the probiotic is important too.

Seems to be working for me.

You might need a stronger antibiotic.

Thanks for your replies! I have had a culture done, but it doesn't show that any bacteria are there, which is pretty confusing. I have also been taking D-Mannose as well, but it doesn't seem to have an effect on me. I'm not sure my doctor will give me any more antibiotics since both the dipstick test and the culture seem to show that I don't have a bacterial infection.

My symptom of constantly needing a wee has to be to do with the utis i've been having - it's too much of a conincidence.

Have you considered having a full sexual health screen? With a negative urine culture it may be worth considering this as a potential cause?

userxx · 02/09/2019 21:01

I've had this before when no bacteria was showing up but I definitely had a uti, so frustrating as my doctor wouldn't give me any antibiotics. I use tablets called Azo, bloody brilliant but can only be bought on eBay or amazon.

Long shot. But I've been diagnosed with uti's a few times. Now pregnant I didn't want to take the antibiotics and when there was blood they did an internal (if ai wasn't preggers I would have just taken the tabs as normal). Examination showed I have an eptitropic cervix (cervical erosion), very common and goes away naturally, despite sounding grim. I only got this care due to pregnancy, reckon I've had it years as I've always had a lot of pain 'down there' and have always been diagnosed with uti's.

How old are you? Urethritis and soreness and burning when passing water can be a symptom of the menopause.

SureTry · 02/09/2019 21:17

I went throughout this. I was prescribed 3 different types of antibiotics for the UTI but was still suffering with the symptoms. My GP finally did a swab which showed I had thrush, obviously happened because of the antibiotics. At the time I would never have put it down to thrush as the symptoms were so similar to the UTI. Might be worth getting a swab done.

daniel0112 · 04/09/2019 19:55

Thanka for the information everyone! Suretry, I will ask them to test for thrush, but I don't have any of the symptoms for it - was this the case for you? I'm also not sure if thrush can cause the symptom of needing a wee all the time.

I was exactly like you, to the extent that I thought I was definitely still suffering with the UTI. I had never had thrush symptoms, just felt the need to urinate a lot, which would alleviate the pain for a bit then it would come bax

SureTry · 05/09/2019 07:29

Sorry accidentally post too soon.

The pain would come back and I would spend my time trying to distract myself or sit cross legged.

I've had scans done and a camera inserted to look inside my bladder. I've been told it's an overactive bladder now. I did end up getting another UTI within the year of the last one, I had antibiotics and ended up with thrush again.

I am currently going through this and am waiting for a referral to urology. I have started taking something called D Mannose which seems to be working, 5 days after taking it a lot of my symptoms are improving. Might be worth looking up and giving a try op.

AnnaFiveTowns · 05/09/2019 07:53

This is a huge problem for women. The tests are not accurate and we're being fobbed off by Drs when we actually do have infections. Google Professsor Malone Lee and some of the stuff he's written about UTIs. You probably still have an infection, OP but it's not showing up in the tests.

Ellapaella · 05/09/2019 09:33

Thank you for that link. Very interesting article.
