Smear test when spotting

crazycatgal · 26/08/2019 07:56

I'm due to have my first smear test in 2 days and I've started spotting today, I'm on the implant and I have sparse/irregular periods.

Will I still be able to attend my smear test if I'm still spotting? I rang the GP 5 weeks ago and this was the first appointment they had, and that was with me having full availability due to being off work.

I'm back to work next week and don't think I'll be able to get another appointment for months if I miss this one.

I went when I was spotting and she checked but couldn't do it. She said if it was only a tiny bit up there it'd be fine, but it looked like I was about to come on.

Worth going and seeing if they can.

@Pinkstars2501 I'm just worried that this will happen to me because you just can't get an appointment at my surgery so I don't know when I would be able to get another appointment.

Yeh I know, I had to wait ages for another appointment.

Unless you're worried something is wrong though I'd just grab the first appointment available if they can't do it this time. If you're worried, I'm sure sexual health clinics also do smears if that's something you'd consider.

Just go along, you never know they might be able to do it. The spotting may even just be brief and be gone by then.

@Pinkstars2501 I'm definitely going today and hoping it can be done.

I'm a teacher and I'm not allowed to have appointments during my working hours unfortunately so I can only do evenings. I also googled the sexual health services around here and it says on their website to see your GP for smear tests.

Hope it went ok!

crazycatgal · 28/08/2019 21:43

@Pinkstars2501 Thanks, unfortunately it wasn't so straightforward, they've found a polyp on my cervix so I've been sent for an urgent referral. Trying not to worry!

Sorry it wasn't as straight forward as you'd hope.
Hopefully that polyp will be dealt with swiftly.

@crazycatgal, did they manage to get the smear OK? I had continuous bleeding and the did manage to take the smear even though they weren't sure if ot would be readable.
I had my polyps removed yesterday. I had a internal scan which found polyps and cysts.
Hope your appt comes through quickly. Waiting is very stressful.
Hope you receive

crazycatgal · 29/08/2019 11:24

@catnidge Thanks for your comment. I couldn't have the smear because the polyp was in the way. Were your polyps benign? I'm not going to lie I've spent the night thinking the worst.

I've had the polyps removed, my smear showed CGIN (unrelated to the polyps) so have had to have a number of gynae procedures under GA. They removed polyps at the same time, biopsies have been sent off and I should have results in 2 weeks.
Most polyps are benign and they are pretty common. I have found all the waiting hard but it has only been 6 weeks from first appt to Op and I was away for 2 weeks.
If your appts come through in school hours insist on taking the time off, for your health and peace of mind.
I also work in a school and wil be attending my appts come what may.
The good thing is you are in the system and although scary it's a good place to be.

crazycatgal · 29/08/2019 13:04

@catnidge I've spoken to my head about what's happened and she said she's happy for me to have time off for any appointments that I need for this which is good.

I agree that the waiting is hard, knowing that I have up to 2 weeks to wait for my referral appointment is hard. The nurse and GP were very reassuring and said that it was unlikely to be anything serious but obviously your mind starts working overtime when these things happen. I'll have to go back for a smear when the polyp is removed.
