Pelvic / Groin / Retal pain - 9 months postpartum

Hello!

I had my little girl 9 months ago... I had pelvic and groin pains during pregnancy... and lower back probs. I'm sure it was Spd but my Doctor didn't think it was severe enough to diagnose.

Anyway, it gor better a month or 2 after I had her but recently (last few months) it's been getting worse again. I have pain in the left side of my groin particularly after walking and I have a kind of ache and sometimes stabbing pain in the bum (!) I'm sure it's all connected... it kind of feels like a strain or pulled muscle but it can be quite sharp and more sudden sometimes. Since pregnancy I've alway felt really weak around the pelvis area... finding it more difficult to get up etc. I have an achy lower back too but think that's just a given.

I've been referred to a physio who's given me strengthening exercises and told me to work on my core and pelvic floor and I also do yoga once or twice a week. Nothing is changing and actually I'm only getting more active as my LO gets bigger so I think this is putting more strain on me again.

I've read SPD and PGP can continue for a while postpartum but can't seem to quite find the right diagnosis online (I will go back to the docs eventually but they've not been much help so far!)

Just wondered if anyone has experienced anything similar or has any advice. It's the bum pain that's getting me cos I can't seem to find anything that describes this as a SPD/PGP type symptom.

Thank you 🙏💛

Hi OP,

Would you consider seeing a chiropractor? I was lucky enough to find one with a specialism in treating pregnant and postpartum ladies and she's helped me enormously.

I also had SPD in pregnancy (DD is 7 months now) and while the agonising pain when walking lifted after birth l still had soreness. Chiropractor really helped postpartum, I mentioned in passing to her I had shooting pains whenever I kneeled, couldn't put any weight at all on it which was a total pain. She said it was due to pelvis being out of kilter, did the tiniest of adjustments and it felt a fair bit better. A further two sessions and completely gone, no pain for months now.

Might be worth a try?

Meant to add, I still get something similar to the sharp bum pain you described. It's steadily getting better as my core strength returns and things being in the right place obviously helps. Pretty sure weakness in that core and pelvic area has a wide knock-on effect. The joys!!

I have this. I've just started seeing a chiropractor so can't say how its going yet but I left it years before I did anything and this means it's going to take longer for him to fix me. Worth going for a consultation appointment if you can afford it. My course of treatment is quite hefty so do something sooner rather than later.

Is the stabbing bum pain piles? I had the postpartum and still do sometimes. A course of prednisolone suppositories sorted it.

As for the ongoing PGP have you check for diastasis recti?
