Please could someone provide any reassurance?
I've been having some bloody discharge in between my periods. I'm really worried that it's something sinister so I saw my doctor. She checked my cervix and said it looked fine but there was an inflamed area, which could be an infection or caused by hormones.
The doctor said it wasn't anything sinister, but I've come home and googled inflamed cervix and it says this can be a sign of something sinister (cancer).
I'm beyond worried. Please help.

Anyone?

It's probably an ectropion- used to be called a cervical erosion. Nothing to do with cancer. They often clear up on their own. Have a google and stop worrying.

Are you up to date with your smear tests, OP? And did the GP take any samples when she examined you?
If you want a second opinion, you could go to a GUM clinic- they’re pretty clued up, and will be able to tell you if it’s just an infection, or refer you to Gynae if they think it needs further investigation. But your GP obviously doesn’t think it’s a problem or she would have done that herself. I agree with a PP that an ectropion is most likely.

Thank you for your replies. My smear test is up to date and the last one was normal. The Gp didn't take any samples. Would an ectropion cause inflammation?

Have you looked up ectropion? If your GP said it looked inflamed and maybe caused by an infection she ought to have taken a swab.

Ectropion- It's where the cells lining the cervix start to grow outside . They are delicate and can bleed.

I'd go back for another opinion and another GP.

Anxiousme · 09/08/2019 12:26

I had a quick look but from what I read it wasn't clear whether ectropion would cause an inflamed appearance.
I think I will get another opinion. I'm so worried.

Your GP sounds pretty useless TNH. They really ought to have explained.

Ectropions- google some photos. The cells from inside the cervix grow on the outside. They are red. They look inflamed. if you are up to day with smears, it's bound to be okay.
