Aura preceded by migraine

I started getting migraines infrequently following an MC 2.5 years ago. Since then I've had 3 or 4 in total. Most recently last week. Started Wednesday with headache then woke up Thursday with severe pain on left side of my head. Pain eased off Friday although I was nauseous all weekend. Today is the first day I've felt 'normal' but then this evening I started experiencing visual disturbance, like the aura that usually precedes the migraine pain. It seems weird that it's happened this way round, has this ever happened to anyone? I did have the same thing happen before about a year ago, it just doesn't seem like it ever happens that way round so not sure if something else is going on? Any input would be appreciated!

Maybe it’s another one starting?
Are you on the combined pill? When I started taking Celeste I was having 3 aura migraines a day! Which gradually petered out and I stupidly stayed on it, eventually came off it years later after letting slip to doc that they’d started again
Also this oppressive thundery weather has caused them for me before
It’s might be a symptom of the same migraine or the start of a separate one . What does your doctor say ?

Thanks for replying. I'm not on the pill. I woke up ok, no headache but just now I had the same visual impairment/hallucinations which lasted 20 mins or so. I haven't actually been to the GP as the migraines are so infrequent but I think I'm going to make an appointment tomorrow.

My dd14 gets Migraine with Aura.

Last year we were referred to a senior paediatrician at the hospital as she was having visual disturbances and hallucinations that she described as 'Deja vu attacks'. Very frequent and very frightening.

It took a while to unpick but the doctor said it's possible to have auras before a 'silent' migraine (ie no pain). They wondered if she might be experiencing a kind of 'vacant' epileptic fit but ruled it out as she wasn't 'fitting'. In the end he ruled it as a strange form of panic attack (although she said she didn't feel anxious).

He seems to be correct as since then she's actively tried to relax using meditation etc.

I would definitely see the doctor. Things I've learned in the past year is that migraines with Aura are very strange things that are often different for each person ranging from visual hallucinations to resembling stroke symptoms.

I hope you get to the bottom of it.

I know migraines can last for several days while the pain waxes and wanes...so you might think you are over it, but it comes back. Maybe the aura is just in the middle of your migraine, so to speak. Do you have any medications to help deal with it? There are several good ones just for migraines that are not the same as ordinary pain killers

radioactiveimagination · 07/08/2019 11:49

Thanks for the replies. I've now started to get a headache

Seatoski maybe that's it, it's just a very long protracted migraine attack. I haven't really felt all right since last Tuesday. What medication would you recommend? I am BF my 14 mo DS so not sure if I can anything except ibuprofen/paracetamol.

Migraine runs in my family very heavily both mother and father and I started with them when I was a child. I would feel like the room was getting bigger and me smaller and then I was getting bigger and the room smaller. This gave way to auras and now I notice a blind fuzzy spot which means I am getting a migraine. I take painkillers immediately and sometimes I can head off the migraine you get about a 20 minute ‘warning’. Over those 20 mins I am virtually blind I can’t see then the headache will come on one side. Usually the headache is on the other side to where the aura began. I once had one for 5 days with vomiting and had to have IV fluids and painkillers. Sumatriptan is very hit and miss with me. I’ve also had aura with no pain but nausea for hours. These are silent migraines

My DD’s also get migraines, some with aura some not but DD has cluster migraines and has a nasal spray which helps. Cluster migraines are fucking evil IMO!

I also go through phases - none for ages then 3 in a row

Some dietary links are there, my DM cannot have sweetners or she is knocked out for days

  • Go to the opticians firstly. One sign for me is that my prescription has changed
  • eliminate anything that could be a new trigger. Air freshers are bad for this
  • migralieve has an anti sickness in it
  • see your pharmacist as there is an OTC medication they may give you
  • see GP if these are really affecting your life Badly ie missing work

My ds has migraines, his neuroloist suggested
A vitamin supplement called migralief (we are in the US but maybe you can google it and bunch together the supplements it contains)
A preventive medicine call amitriptaline
A rescue medicine called sumatriptan

The preventive medicine didnt really work for him (made him fall asleep in school) so he tried propanolol as an alternative, but we ended up using accupunture and head massage which has helped him a lot. He does use the rescue medicine about twice a month.

There are loads of different drugs you can take and you just have to work your way through them until you find the one that suits you

I get auras before migraines but also occasionally get them without ever getting the usual migraine, although never immediately following one.

PenguinsRabbits · 08/08/2019 02:32

I would go to the doctor to check it is a migraine. Does sound like migraine and with a history of migraine it probably is that but worth getting checked. The doctor should also be able to help with migraines if its that, my DD gets those and doctor gave her meds. Daughters are caused by hormonal changes. I would also get eyes checked.
