Misery of long lasting thrush

I'm hoping someone has some words of wisdom for me? I've been suffering with thrush since I had my daughter 5 years ago. I never had it previously but had it's constantly when I was pregnant with her. Since then I may have the odd month off but otherwise have it pretty much constantly. I've had two rounds of 6 months worth of treatment but as soon as I stop it just comes back. I'm feeling so down with it now. It's misery and I'm spending a fortune on treatments. Any advice?!

No advice from me, but about 2 months ago I finished my first round of 6 month treatment and was assured that it would clear it up for good. It's been threatening to come back for the last two months, but last week it started up again and I've used a pessary, but feel like I'm going to be back where I started. It really sucks. Completely empathise with you, hopefully I can piggy back on your thread and share the advice!

I don't think anyone would advocate this but I have suffered the same as you since I was pregnant two years ago. The only thing that keeps it at bay is to use the thrush cream, just the standard one, every morning and night, every day. I'm pregnant again now and haven't had thrush yet (21 weeks) and last time I had it every couple of weeks. It's truly miserable so you have my every sympathy.

Have you tried plain, live yoghurt as an overnight treatment?

ZenNudist · 24/07/2019 21:27

I just use the cream ad hoc when it gets uncomfortable. The pessary does not work

Epwell · 24/07/2019 21:29

Try taking grapefruit seed oil. Citricidal. Trust me, it works like a dream, no idea why but it does.

NonTraditionalFeelings · 24/07/2019 21:31

The creams do nothing for me. Only the tablets actually get rid of it 😔

Are you having sex and if so is your sexual partner also taking the treatment as he may be reinfecting you. You may need to abstain from sex for some time until you are both clear. Get advice from an STI clinic in any case.

I'd suggest get treatment for the partner as well as yourself, when it's completely gone, try vaginal probiotics (make sure it's 100% gone though), cut on dairy. I noticed regular sex keeps it away too.

Laura221 · 24/07/2019 22:02

I had thrush for 6 months. What cleared it in the end was taking a daily probiotic tablet and the oral capsule once a week for 6 weeks. I made sure my husband had 2 tablets too. I brought the tablets online as it's much cheaper. I feel your pain, hope it clears up soon.

mistermagpie · 24/07/2019 23:04

The cream actually doesn't work for me when I have thrush (only the pessary has any effect) but I use it as a preventative thing and, as I say, I genuinely think it works. Although a dr might not approve!

NonTraditionalFeelings · 24/07/2019 23:58

Im single so no reinfection going on. I get symptoms just before my period so I think it may be hormone related. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

This might be too woo for you but it works for me every time.
600ml of cooled boiled water. Add 10 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of lavender oil. Mix well, soak a tampon and insert. Do this twice a day, leave the tampon in as long as is safe. Clears my thrush in less than a day.
Also, just use warm water to wash your vulva and vagina. Never soap or any detergent.

Hi OP, I suffered like this for years (started when I was a teenager, before I was sexually active) and tried everything suggested here but it always came back. For the past four years I’ve taken a 50mg flucanazole tablet and it’s completely kept it at bay. It was recommended by the gynaecologist I saw to get my mirena coil changed, according to her many GP’s are reluctant to prescribe it as an ongoing treatment but that in such a low dose so long as you don’t have any liver issues (they did a liver function test for me before prescribing) it’s fine. According to her some people are just susceptible to thrush and only a regular dose like I’m on will keep it at bay. I’m in Scotland so get it for free but they come in packs of 14 tablets so even with prescription fees it would also be a lot cheaper than having to buy the one off tablets. Suggest speaking to your GP or if you have a sexual health clinic near you maybe see if you can speak to someone there who will have more knowledge about it. Hope you get it sorted, thrush is miserable, I used to find it difficult to get through the day when I had it.

Go to a sexual health clinic, I got it that bad I couldnt sit down, wouldn't clear up with otc stuff, they gave me a stronger oral tablet, canesten with hydrocortisone & told me to go back in 7 days, it was just starting to clear up by then. My skin was so bad it was tearing & bleeding, the doctor said it was one of the worst cases she had seen, I ended up having 2 courses of the tablet & cream, then a maintenance dose of the tablet once a week for a month. She told me to wash all knickers on a boil wash with non biological powder, don't wash the area with soap, don't have baths except for plain water with Epsom salts & either lavender or tea tree oil, to wash with emollient cream or E45 cream, no tight clothing, 100% cotton knickers & if I needed antibiotics for anything else to get a prescription for the tablet & cream at the same time to use as soon as I finished the antibiotics.
