Endometrial Ablation with or without general anaesthetic

Hi has anyone had an endometrial ablation with local anaesthetic? I am due to have one but I am a bit of a wimp and opted for general anasthetic. I am now having second thoughts and just wondered if having a local is painful etc? Any advice greatly appreciated

I had mine with a general last month. I was out for an hour and the effects had worn off within 48hrs. So glad I did - I didn't want to have any notion of the burning smell.

Best of luck.

Great thanks for the info maybe I will stick to the general. Also another question did they do a blood test at your pre op?

I’m having one today with a general anaesthetic, I’m just scanning through looking for tips.

Waifsandstrays · 18/06/2019 07:58

I had one without a general and would not recommend it at all.

ThinkWittyThoughts · 18/06/2019 08:45

I didn't have a blood test in my pre op but I believe that was only because I had an op under general less than 12m before at the same hospital (same surgeon).

All the other women on the ward had bloods taken.

Tip for the day: take a phone charger! And physical reading material. If the surgeon turns up in the morning and decides to do the one big surgery first and all the little ones afterwards it's a looooooong, boooooorriiiing wait Grin

Oh, I’ve been told not to bring my phone or any valuables, just a book or magazine.

LizziesTwin · 18/06/2019 08:49

It’s all very vague and I’m not sure how I tell my daughter to come & get me. I guess I’ll have to learn her mob number

Deyes999 · 18/06/2019 08:52

What is it like without general?

Just a book or a magazine? If you are not having it privately you could be waiting there for hours. I'd take my phone at least.

greenwaterbottle · 18/06/2019 09:13

I had one with sedation (medicine up the bum) it wasn't painful, hard to describe maybe more like a weird period pain.

LizziesTwin · 18/06/2019 09:23

They couldn’t do a biopsy on me without sedation, my cervix is hard to find & I’ve got a retroverted cervix.

LizziesTwin · 18/06/2019 09:24

Retroverted uterus, not cervix. Distracting myself from having to catch the bus & go.

Deyes999 · 18/06/2019 10:53

Let's just hope it's all worth it and reduces the bleeding

So - update for you @Deyes999

I am back home today as planned. It was only when I had the pre-op meeting with the anaesthetist that they realised I hadn't had a blood test, so that was done at about 12.30 or so (no watch or phone so times approximate). The senior consultant talked me through the consent form, what they were planning on doing (Novasure) and what the risks were. I met the consultant anaesthetist and she was lovely, basically all the consultants looked to be about my age & sex (45-53 at a guess) so it was quite pleasant, just like meeting friends of friends. I could have brought my phone, they were surprised that I hadn't brought it, but I said that I hadn't as it said not to. I walked down to the room where they gave me the anaesthetic with a health care assistant from the ward in my dressing gown, compression stockings and sandals (didn't bring slippers as I thought I'd rather wear sandals than my lovely deluxe Christmas present Ugg slippers). The anaesthetic team were all lovely and then I don't remember anything until I was in recovery, I felt fab in there and wish I could have stayed there for a couple of days, v peaceful and relaxing. Then I was wheeled back to the ward, still a bit whoozy and had my blood pressure taken a few times. Another consultant came to see me to tell me how the procedure had gone and that I could go once the cannula for the anaesthetic had been removed and I had urinated. My daughter came and got me and I was home within 2 hours of having the procedure. I had some cramps and they gave me one tramadol. The Novasure website says no sex or tampons for a month but I wasn't told that at the hospital, also no swimming today (!). I'll update again tomorrow so the info is out there for anyone else in this situation. I haven't had a hormonal IUD inserted as I was sterilised after my youngest child started primary school.

There are a few other details I can pass on but I'd rather do them by PM as they are more identifying.

Hope this helps Flowers.

Thanks LizziesTwin that is so kind of you to take the time to send an update. It is really appreciated and I am certain will reassure not just myself but others in the future. There is not that many reviews online about the ablation so it's great to hear from somebody who has just had the procedure. I hope the after effects go smoothly for you over the next few days. Thanks againSmile

You’re welcome. My daughter, her friend & I went out to dinner, daughter drove and we parked right outside. I still feel fine and am looking forward to not having to walk the dogs first thing tomorrow Smile

I was offered endometrial ablation last year and was only offered GA as an option. In the end I didn't have it but may have to have it later on down the line or a hysterectomy. I know people that have had it u der GA and were all positive stories.
