Ovarian cysts/ Polycystic ovaries?

Hi!

I can’t find a lot of information on the internet that matches my situation right now so i’m desperate for help!

I had an ultrasound a few days ago for unrelated bladder issues, while everything with those turned out to be okay, the doctor mentioned he found many small cysts on both my ovaries. He said this means that I am ovulating normally, however I’m using the nexplanon implant which prevents ovulation. I explained this to him and he came up with a vague response about hormones and brushed over it.

Reading about this I found lots of information about PCOS, but I don’t have all the symptoms of this.

Is it possible to have polycystic ovaries without PCOS? How can I have these cysts without being able to ovulate, and if they don’t go away will this impact on my fertility? I am 20 at the minute.

Thanks,
N x

I can't answer all of your questions but I have cysts on my ovaries and actually had to have a grapefruit sized one removed. I don't have polycystic ovary syndrome, but I do have endometriosis.

I'm not a doctor but I do have PCOS.

My understanding is that PCOS is fluid filled follicles inside the ovaries that go around the eggs that are underdeveloped and don't release eggs. Contrary to the name they aren't actually cysts. Also YES you can have poly cystic ovaries without having PCOS though depending on your weight it could be that you have PCOS but the symptoms aren't present at the moment. Women with lower weight tend to experience less of the symptoms.

Ovarian Cysts are typically on the outside of the ovaries and can be filled with fluid like PCOS or other things like the stuff hair and nails and stuff is made of.

So question 1 is which type of "cyst" do you have?

You might also want to look into how nexplanon works? Ovulation is when the body releases eggs, so its possible that your body is producing the liquidy sacks that make up PCOS "cysts" and go around the eggs but not actually releasing the eggs. Or maybe not even developing the eggs. So I would start with how the implant actually works as a research point.

You could go back to him and ask for more information. Just say "You mentioned this last time and I would like more information about it" Its your body, its your right to know. Otherwise you could ask someone for a second opinion.

Sorry I can't be more helpful but that's all I really know on the topic and mostly from my own research.
